People Power Party protests the unilateral formation of the National AssemblyPeople Power Party protests the unilateral formation of the National Assembly (Seoul=Yonhap News) Reporter Lee Dong-hae = People Power Party Floor Leader Jeong Jeom-sik and other attending lawmakers hold signs during a protest against the unilateral formation of the National Assembly, held at the Rotunda Hall of the National Assembly on the 29th. 2026.6.29 eastsea@yna.co.krThe People Power Party (PPP) announced on the 20th that it would launch a filibuster (an obstruction of parliamentary proceedings through unlimited debate) to protest the Democratic Party of Korea’s attempt to unilaterally pass an extension for the 2nd Comprehensive Special Prosecutor Act during a plenary session of the National Assembly, labeling the move as "legislative tyranny."

The PPP held a closed-door general meeting of lawmakers ahead of the plenary session, followed by a protest rally in the Rotunda Hall.

Floor Leader Jeong Jeom-sik stated, "The People Power Party will use the filibuster to expose the unscrupulous reality of this situation to the public, as the opposition party has completely trampled upon the minimum basic principles of dialogue and compromise, and is once again driving the runaway train of legislative tyranny solely by relying on its parliamentary seat count."

Floor Leader Jeong criticized the move, saying, "Out of 17 arrest warrants requested by the comprehensive special prosecutor team, 11 have been dismissed, resulting in a staggering dismissal rate of 65%. They have lost credibility by issuing excessive arrest warrants without even being able to substantiate charges. They are delaying investigations into public livelihood cases by siphoning off front-line prosecutors, passing the damage onto the public—so why do they insist on extending this over and over again?"

He added, "We strongly condemn the arrogance and unscrupulous nature of the opposition party, which is forcing through legislative tyranny by sheer strength in a National Assembly where even the organizational structure has not been finalized, all while attempting to prolong a political climate of public security aimed solely at suppressing the opposition."

Supreme Council member Shin Dong-wook also pointed out, "A regime that started with special prosecutors will surely see its end through special prosecutors. What results have the Insurrection Special Prosecutor, the Kim Keon-hee Special Prosecutor, and the Chae Hae-young Special Prosecutor actually produced? What have they achieved after mobilizing so much personnel and wasting so much taxpayer money?"

He emphasized, "This special prosecutor system has already sufficiently demonstrated its political bias and incompetence to the public. The Lee Jae-myung administration may have four years left, but they may have to face the monster of 'special prosecutors' throughout those four years. We must fight."

Youth Supreme Council member Woo Jae-jun said, "How can they conduct investigations by unconditionally demanding that a special prosecutor somehow produce results until something comes up? There was a case where a Yangpyeong public official committed suicide while under investigation for the Yangpyeong Gongheung district development project. It was the special prosecutor who killed him, and there will be more victims."

He further stressed, "The special prosecutor must be stopped. If it must continue, the blade should now be turned toward the Democratic Party. We must investigate why National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik delayed the vote on lifting martial law, how Prime Minister Kim Min-seok knew in advance that martial law would occur, and who ordered the abandonment of appeals regarding the Daejang-dong case."

The lawmakers held signs that read, "Stop the Political Retaliation Special Prosecutor that ignores public livelihood and has wasted 37 billion won of taxpayer money for 13 months!" and chanted slogans such as, "Withdraw the retaliatory special prosecutor that wastes taxpayers' money! We condemn the Lee Jae-myung administration for its legislative tyranny that ignores public livelihood." [Yonhap News]
