Jang Dong-hyuk, leader of the People Power Party, speaks at a Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly in Yeouido, Seoul on the 8th. Yonhap News.
The People Power Party continued its offensive on the 8th, calling the arrest of South Koreans at the construction site of Hyundai Motor Group-LG Energy Solution's joint battery factory in Georgia, USA, a result of the government's diplomatic failure.
Supreme Council member Shin Dong-wook questioned at a Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly, "I will ask President Lee Jae-myung directly. What happened at the South Korea-US summit? What exactly did you hear from President Trump? Why couldn't you get even one agreement document despite promising an enormous investment of 700 trillion won in the US?"
He argued, "The US government publicly displaying the scene of handcuffs being put on Korean expatriate employees and their feet being chained is a message to the South Korean government to watch carefully," adding, "It is difficult to understand this as anything other than a message that this is what will be done to citizens of a country that suppresses the opposition party, engages in political retaliation, and persecutes religion."
Supreme Council member Kim Min-soo stated, "The South Korea-US alliance is collapsing. The US, the vanguard of the free world, is trying to cut ties with South Korea," and declared, "The arrest of Koreans is not mere law enforcement but a political message and a strong warning to Lee Jae-myung, who is shaking hands with communist China."
Supreme Council member Yang Hyang-ja also said, "This action is a warning from President Trump to the South Korean government," and attributed it to "the aftermath of pushing for stronger commercial law and anti-corporate laws like the Yellow Envelope Bill, led by the Minister of Employment and Labor, who comes from the most radical ideological group, the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions."
The People Power Party is expected to focus on highlighting the government's diplomatic missteps as the background for the incident during the question-and-answer sessions at the National Assembly's Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee and the Trade, Industry, Small and Medium Venture Business Committee, which are scheduled to be held that afternoon.
Jang Dong-hyuk, the party leader, is also expected to raise the issue during his luncheon meeting with President Lee on the same day and question the outcomes of the South Korea-US summit.
Park Sung-hoon, the senior spokesperson, told reporters at the National Assembly, "While the presidential office seems to think the purpose of this summit is to resolve the outcomes of the South Korea-US summit, we will be discussing whether the government's response to the detention of our citizens in Georgia a few days ago was appropriate."
On the 4th (local time), US immigration authorities conducted a large-scale crackdown on illegal immigrants at the construction site of Hyundai Motor Group-LG Energy Solution's joint battery factory (HL-GA Battery Company) in Savannah, Georgia, arresting and detaining 475 people, including approximately 300 South Koreans. It is reported that many of them will return to Korea on the 10th in the form of voluntary departure, following negotiations with the South Korean government for their release.
