  • "Not a moral controversy, but a corruption of marriage due to abuse of power"... Call for resignation of standing committee chairman

최민희 위원장에 사퇴요구하는 국민의힘On October 29, at the plenary audit of the Ministry of Science and ICT and other agencies held at the National Assembly's Science, ICT, Broadcasting, and Communications Committee in Yeouido, Seoul, Chairperson Choi Min-hee is receiving calls for resignation from People Power Party lawmakers, including Representative Choi Su-jin. Yonhap News.

The People Power Party stated on the 31st that Choi Min-hee, a lawmaker from the Democratic Party and chairperson of the National Assembly's Science, ICT, Broadcasting, and Communications Committee, should "resign from her committee chairperson position immediately, not end this with a vague apology," regarding the controversy surrounding her daughter's wedding.

Choi Eun-seok, the party's floor leader and chief spokesperson, said in a statement that day, "Although Rep. Choi belatedly apologized for the controversy surrounding her daughter's 'power-backed wedding,' it was nothing more than a perfunctory apology that mocks the public."

He criticized, "Rep. Choi's case is no longer a simple moral controversy but has already escalated into clear criminal suspicion. Rep. Choi has been accused of receiving a total of 8 million won in cash and gifts from eight individuals under the pretext of her child's marriage. This is an unprecedented abuse of power for a wedding, reducing a public official's authority and position into a channel for private financial gain."

Floor Leader Choi emphasized, "Now is not the time to gauge public opinion, but a time to realize that one must humbly stand before the judgment of the law. Declaring immediate resignation before the public is the last remnant of a public servant's conscience."

The previous day, as the Science, ICT, Broadcasting, and Communications Committee's parliamentary audit concluded, Rep. Choi stated regarding the controversy over her daughter's wedding, "I apologize to the public. I deeply regret and am disappointed that I did not manage the situation better to prevent such controversy from arising. It is my fault."
