General Motors (GM), an American automaker, has decided to shift production of its Buick Envision model from China to the United States, Reuters reported on the 22nd (local time).

According to the report, GM plans to end Envision production in China and begin manufacturing the next-generation model at its manufacturing facility in the Kansas City, USA, area starting in 2028.

In a statement sent to Reuters, GM said, "This decision will strengthen GM's domestic production and contribute to job creation in the United States."

The Buick Envision, a mid-size sport utility vehicle (SUV), has been produced in China and exported to the U.S. since 2017.

Along with Ford's Lincoln Nautilus, the Buick Envision accounts for the majority of Chinese-made vehicles sold in the U.S. These models have been targeted by the United Auto Workers (UAW) and politicians in Michigan, an area with a high concentration of automotive manufacturing facilities, due to concerns about job losses in the U.S.

Last year, GM announced that it would increase its domestic vehicle production base by investing over 5 trillion won in new capital over two years, following the potential inauguration of a second Donald Trump administration.

As part of its plan to expand U.S. production, GM intends to produce the Chevrolet Blazer and Chevrolet Equinox, currently manufactured in Mexico, at its U.S. plants.

GM currently produces models such as the Trax Crossover and Trailblazer in Korea. Among these, the Trax Crossover, produced exclusively in Korea, is a popular model with high sales in the U.S.

At an investor event last year, GM stated that there were no immediate plans to adjust production volume at GM Korea.
