The People Power Party announced on the 31st that a total of five individuals, including former Minister of Employment and Labor Kim Moon-soo, Rep. Ahn Cheol-soo, Rep. Jang Dong-hyuk, Rep. Cho Kyeong-tae, and Rep. Ju Jin-woo (in alphabetical order), have registered as candidates for the party's leadership in the August 22nd national convention.

Fifteen candidates have registered for the Supreme Council election, which will select four members, including incumbent lawmakers Shin Dong-wook and Choi Su-jin.

Among those not currently serving as lawmakers are Kang Sung-hyun, a candidate in the 19th general election; Kim Geun-sik, chairman of the Songpa-byung district party chapter; Kim Min-soo, former spokesperson; Kim So-yeon, a lawyer; Kim Jae-won, former supreme council member; Kim Tae-woo, former mayor of Gangseo-gu, Seoul; Ryu Yeo-hae, former supreme council member of the Liberty Korea Party; Son Bum-kyu, former chairman of the Incheon chapter; Yang Ja-ya, former lawmaker; Jang Young-ha, a lawyer; Ham Woon-kyung, chairman of the Mapo-eul district party chapter; Hong Seok-jun, former lawmaker; and Hwang Si-hyuk, chairman of the Daegu Youth Innovation Academy.

According to the party constitution and bylaws, if no female candidate is among the top four vote-getters, the highest-polling female candidate will be elected as a Supreme Council member in place of the fourth-highest vote-getter. The female candidates for Supreme Council are lawyer Kim So-yeon, former Supreme Council member Ryu Yeo-hae, former lawmaker Yang Ja-ya, and Rep. Choi Su-jin, totaling four individuals.

For the single Youth Supreme Council position, designated for those under 45, Rep. Woo Jae-jun is the only incumbent lawmaker to have registered.

Among those not currently serving as lawmakers, Park Hong-jun, acting chairman of the People Power Party Central Youth Committee; Son Soo-jo, CEO of Leaders Club; and Choi Woo-sung, CEO of Clean Professional, have thrown their hats into the ring.

The People Power Party's National Convention Election Management Committee will hold a meeting on the 1st of next month to conduct an eligibility review of the registered candidates and finalize the candidate list.

Following the eligibility review, if the number of candidates for party leader exceeds four or the number of candidates for Supreme Council exceeds eight, the People Power Party will hold preliminary elections on the 5th-6th of next month. These preliminary elections will reflect 50% of the results from a vote among responsible party members and 50% from a public opinion poll. The preliminary elections will narrow down the candidates to four for party leader and eight for Supreme Council.

The finalists will engage in full-scale election campaigning through joint rallies in various regions and televised debates. Yonhap News
