The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AmCham) has expressed concerns about the potential impact of labor disputes and strike possibilities at Samsung Electronics on global supply chains, industrial stability, and Korea's long-term investment competitiveness.

In a press release on the 11th, AmCham stated, "If significant production disruptions or operational uncertainties occur at Samsung Electronics, concerns may further escalate regarding supply bottlenecks in the global memory semiconductor market, increased price volatility, procurement stability, and overall supply chain resilience."

AmCham member companies also heavily rely on stable semiconductor supply chains based in Korea. Disruptions in strategic industries could have ripple effects across global supply chains, extending beyond individual companies and markets.

Consequently, AmCham warned, "Labor uncertainty within key export industries can also affect Korea's status as a stable and reliable global manufacturing, technology, and supply chain partner, as well as its competitiveness as a regional business hub."

Furthermore, it added, "Operational disruptions in strategic industries can also influence global companies' assessments of Korea's credibility and resilience within the global technology ecosystem. If uncertainties expand, the trend of global companies diversifying their supply chains may accelerate."

AmCham also pointed out the possibility of rival countries benefiting as major companies diversify their production and procurement bases to reduce supply chain concentration risks.

Indeed, in the '2026 Domestic Business Environment Survey' released by AmCham last month, Korea ranked third in the preferred Asian regional headquarters locations for global companies, falling behind Singapore and Hong Kong, and losing the second-place position it had held since 2022.

Respondent companies cited labor policies, regulatory predictability, and a business environment aligned with global standards as key factors influencing their regional headquarters and investment strategies.

In particular, situations such as recent labor uncertainties within the semiconductor industry were perceived as factors that could influence global companies' evaluations of Korea's long-term investment environment and overall business stability.

James Kim, Chairman and CEO of AmCham, stated, "Continuous efforts to enhance supply chain reliability, operational stability, and management predictability are crucial for maintaining Korea's long-term global competitiveness. AmCham expects that by fostering constructive dialogue and cooperation among all stakeholders to reach balanced and future-oriented solutions, Korea's long-term competitiveness, supply chain reliability, and its standing as a global investment destination will be continuously strengthened."
