  • SNS claims 'not guilty' of charges of private use of corporate card

Unlimited debate, Chairperson Lee Jin-sook of the Korea Communications Commission seated in the plenary chamberOn the 5th, at the National Assembly's plenary session, while Noh Jong-myun, a lawmaker from the Democratic Party of Korea, continued his unlimited debate (filibuster) regarding the amendment to the Broadcasting Act, Lee Jin-sook, Chairperson of the Korea Communications Commission, listens to the speech. Yonhap News.

Regarding the investigation into allegations of personal use of corporate cards during her tenure as president of Daejeon MBC, Lee Jin-sook, Chairperson of the Korea Communications Commission, reiterated her innocence, stating, "Political investigations for political purposes may harass an individual, but they cannot make them submissive."

On the 8th, the Chairperson posted a video on Facebook showing Shin Jeong-hoon, Chairperson of the National Assembly's Administration and Safety Committee (Democratic Party of Korea), urging Yoo Jae-seong, Acting Commissioner General of the National Police Agency, to expedite the investigation during a plenary session of the committee on the 5th, and wrote the following:

At the time, Chairperson Shin said, "It appears that the situation regarding the misuse of corporate cards has emerged through various compulsory investigation methods. Why is the investigation so sluggish?" He added, "I believe we should conduct a swift compulsory investigation and, if necessary, pursue immediate arrest and detention if there are grounds for suspicion." In response, Acting Commissioner Yoo stated, "I will instruct the National Investigation Headquarters to conduct a swift investigation."

In response, Chairperson Lee asserted, "I have consistently stated in various forums, including parliamentary hearings, that I used the corporate card for business purposes in accordance with regulations." She further claimed, "No amount of pressure can turn innocence into guilt."

She also added that the law on the organization and operation of national and autonomous police forces stipulates as a principle that the Commissioner General of the National Police Agency cannot specifically direct and supervise individual police investigations, and asked the public to "judge for yourselves" regarding the questions and answers between Chairperson Shin and Acting Commissioner Yoo.

Chairperson Lee is currently under police investigation following a complaint filed in July of last year by Democratic Party lawmakers on the National Assembly's Science, ICT, Future, Planning, and Broadcasting and Communications Committee. The allegations are that she caused financial damage to the company by using a corporate card for personal use while serving as president of Daejeon MBC from March 2015 to January 2018 (breach of trust).

One year after being reported, the Daejeon Yuseong Police Station summoned and investigated her twice last month.
