CBS News Editor-in-Chief Barrry Weiss is continuing her efforts to purge progressive ideology from the long-controversial Sunday news program "60 Minutes."
Tanya Simon, daughter of the late legendary correspondent Bob Simon and executive producer of "60 Minutes," who was notorious for her consistently biased attacks on conservatives and President Trump while showing leniency to Democrats and their allies, has been fired and replaced by technology reporter and former New York Times columnist and documentary filmmaker Nick Bilton.
Weiss, who is known to have been recruited under the new ownership of Skydance and Paramount with the mandate to ensure "a diversity of substantive viewpoints," is said to have been the driving force behind the changes.
Bilton, who has no traditional broadcast news experience, issued a statement upon the announcement of his appointment, stating his focus would be on restoring fairness.
He emphasized, "My commitment above all is to ensure fairness in everything we do, from the selection of stories to their editing and broadcast."
Bilton added that he would be meeting with people and listening, saying, "In about 30 days, I'll let you all know how we're going to move forward."
As part of the shake-up, correspondents Sharyn Alfonsi and Cecilia Vega were also fired, along with other senior producers.
The Guardian reported that "Veteran 60 Minutes correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi has expressed concerns about 'corporate interference and editorial timidity spreading' within CBS News and feels insecure about her job security after rebelling against an order to alter her December report on Venezuelan refugees sent to El Salvador's CECOT detention center."
Semafor reported that Bilton said the program is "an amazing program that is largely underutilized" and that he plans to expand the show beyond its Sunday hour-long slot. Bilton envisions a constantly operating program that publishes more in-depth analysis and correspondent-driven content online, Semafor reported.
In an interview with Semafor, he said that the reason media outlets like The New York Times, Vanity Fair, and The New Yorker failed was "because they didn't innovate and shake themselves up," adding, "I think broadcast television is in that situation right now. The most amazing and exciting opportunity for me is to extend the broadcast from an hour a week."
Weiss told staff in a memo on Thursday that the leadership changes reflect the broadcaster's commitment to revitalizing "60 Minutes."
She stated, "The reality facing journalism in 2026 will never be easy. Information is fragmented, algorithms fuel outrage, and AI-generated disinformation is rampant," adding, "Viewers are suffering from information overload and have lost faith in legacy media. This reality makes the mission of '60 Minutes' more important than ever."
Weiss said that one of the reasons she admires David Ellison is that "one of the things tech companies do is share technology across divisions and across companies. For instance, Elon Musk's battery company supplies Tesla with batteries, and AI technology flows from Tesla to SpaceX. Media companies don't think that way. That's what David is doing."
Ellison, since acquiring Weiss's Pre-Press and appointing her editor-in-chief, has been attempting to shift CBS's ideological leaning and restructure it away from traditional linear broadcasting towards special event programming and digital content.
