Canadian police announced Tuesday that a former Air Canada captain is accused of flying more than 900 flights using a fraudulent pilot's license.

Jeffrey Wood, 59, a resident of Ontario, was arrested and charged with seven criminal offenses in an investigation police have named "Project Icarus."

"As captain, the accused had ultimate responsibility for the operation and safety of the aircraft while flying as a pilot," said Peel Regional Police Detective Inspector Chad Mitchell at a press conference.

Police allege Wood piloted 900 flights, both domestic and international, using the forged license.

Mitchell said his qualifications came under scrutiny during a routine operational check at Terminal 1 of Toronto Pearson International Airport in Mississauga, Ontario, in March 2025.

"Red flags were identified in the pilot's license documentation he submitted," the investigator added. "This led to a regulatory investigation by Transport Canada, which concluded, and this criminal investigation followed."

In a statement Monday, Air Canada said safety was not compromised, adding that all pilots undergo "mandatory recurrent training to validate their flying skills" every six months and receive annual flight checks with a Transport Canada-certified pilot.

Air Canada stated, "The employee was a properly trained pilot during his tenure with Air Canada, held a valid commercial pilot's license, and demonstrated a high level of competency to safely operate large aircraft by successfully completing recurrent training or more."

Wood had been flying for years, "defrauding his employer and regulatory bodies of his qualifications and experience using forged license documentation," said Nick Milinovich, Assistant Deputy Chief of Police.

"It's akin to a family doctor performing brain surgery in an operating room," he added.

Wood has been charged with fraud over $5,000, two counts of using forged documents, three counts of possessing forged trademarks, and one count of obstruction of justice.
