President Trump's photo from the first North Korea-U.S. summit [Truth Social capture]

Attention is being drawn to U.S. President Donald Trump's social media post on the 13th (local time) featuring a photograph from the first North Korea-U.S. summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, held eight years ago around this time.

On the same day, President Trump uploaded a photo to his social media platform, Truth Social, showing him and Chairman Kim walking side-by-side, without any additional comments or explanations.

The photograph was taken during the first North Korea-U.S. summit held in Singapore on June 12, 2018, during Trump's first term, as he and Chairman Kim strolled through the gardens of the Capella Hotel, the summit venue.

The backdrop for President Trump's decision to post this photo just after the 8th anniversary of the first North Korea-U.S. summit has sparked curiosity.

At the first North Korea-U.S. summit, President Trump and Chairman Kim agreed to work towards the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and the establishment of a peace regime. However, the second North Korea-U.S. summit, held in Hanoi, Vietnam, in February 2019, to agree on detailed implementation measures, ended without a deal. Following President Trump's defeat in the 2020 presidential election and his failure to secure a second term, the agreements from the first summit effectively stalled, and North Korea subsequently accelerated its path towards strengthening its nuclear arsenal.

President Trump's posting of the photo from the first North Korea-U.S. summit is interpreted as an indication that he views his first summit with Chairman Kim as a personal achievement and a fond memory.

Furthermore, it is difficult to completely rule out the possibility that President Trump is subtly sending a message of his interest in pursuing summit diplomacy with Chairman Kim again.

President Trump had previously stated that regarding a potential meeting with Chairman Kim during his visit to China in mid-May, "It would be great to meet (Chairman Kim), but it could be during this trip to China, or it might not be, or it could be afterwards," as reported by Prime Minister Kim Min-seok to the press after meeting with President Trump at the White House on April 13.

Particularly, given that just before this photo was posted, he shared a message on the same social media platform indicating his intention to sign an agreement related to the end of the war with Iran and denuclearization on the 14th, it is possible to interpret this as President Trump hinting at exploring the possibility of diplomacy with North Korea once the war with Iran, the most pressing national security issue, is resolved.

Last October, during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Gyeongju, and last month, during the U.S.-China summit in Beijing, there were discussions in diplomatic circles about the possibility of President Trump pursuing a "surprise meeting" with Chairman Kim, but these efforts ultimately did not materialize.
