On Friday the 19th, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard announced that, on her final day in office, she would be releasing “previously unreleased” communication records and documents that “expose” how Dr. Anthony Fauci provided millions of dollars in U.S. taxpayer funds to support dangerous gain-of-function research conducted at the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China.

Dr. Fauci served as the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) during the COVID-19 pandemic.

China has claimed that the virus spread from animals to humans at a food market near the laboratory, which has also conducted so-called “gain-of-function research.” This research is generally intended to gain insight into how viruses might behave as they mutate through manipulation.

U.S. intelligence agencies appear divided on how the deadly virus spread globally. The FBI and the Department of Energy have assessed, with low to moderate confidence, that an accidental laboratory leak is the most likely source. The CIA concluded, with low confidence, that the virus is more likely to have a laboratory-related origin than a natural one.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday the 18th, Director Gabbard stated: "Today, on my last day as Director of National Intelligence, I am releasing unreleased documents and records that expose how Dr. Fauci funneled millions of U.S. taxpayer dollars into dangerous genetic manipulation research at the Wuhan lab, how he colluded with political forces within the intelligence community to cover up the truth about his actions and hide the lab-leak origin of the virus, and how he testified falsely under oath before Congress in 2024. It is time for you to know the truth."

According to a press release from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) dated the 18th, Dr. Fauci provided millions of U.S. taxpayer dollars to fund dangerous gain-of-function research on bat coronaviruses at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. This research is now widely considered to be the source of the unintended laboratory leak that triggered the pandemic.

The ODNI released the relevant materials on its website that day, stating, "We are releasing previously unreleased documents and records that expose how Anthony Fauci conspired with politicized high-level officials within the Intelligence Community (IC) to cover up the truth about his actions, the lab-leak origin of the virus, and his role in directing U.S. funding toward dangerous research that resulted in untold damage and the loss of countless lives."

These materials are significant as they directly contradict Dr. Fauci's testimony before the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic in 2024.

During that hearing, Dr. Fauci was repeatedly asked under oath whether he had "ever discussed virus research with the FBI, CIA, DIA, or any other U.S. intelligence agency" before, during, or after the pandemic. Director Gabbard pointed out that Fauci continued to evade the question before ultimately giving a false answer, stating, "I have no knowledge of COVID-19."

Furthermore, multiple whistleblowers have testified that intelligence analysts who challenged Dr. Fauci’s COVID-19 origin theory were often subjected to threats of retaliation, sidelined, or suffered career disadvantages.

"This fostered a culture where dissenting opinions were suppressed, conformity was prioritized over truth, and credible evidence was buried," the ODNI noted.
