As we approach the 80th anniversary of liberation, we must view the unification of North and South Korea not merely as an ideal, but as an achievable reality. The German experience has already provided the answer. Former Chancellor Helmut Kohl recalled, "The United States had the greatest influence on the unification of East and West Germany," and the presence of U.S. forces in Germany served as a diplomatic safety net that persuaded Britain and France.

The Korean Peninsula is no different. China, Russia, and Japan are wary of a unified Korea because they perceive it as a potential new security threat. However, a clear message that U.S. forces will continue to be stationed stably in Korea after unification will be a key factor in persuading neighboring countries.

Despite this, slogans such as "unification among ourselves" and "withdrawal of U.S. forces from Korea" are still being voiced by some within the current government and the left-leaning camp. To speak of unification while chanting anti-American sentiments is akin to insisting on protecting the roof while tearing down the pillars of a house. President Park Chung-hee's concept of "self-reliant defense" was not anti-American; it was a strategy to enhance defense capabilities based on a strong ROK-U.S. alliance. Self-reliant defense and the ROK-U.S. alliance were not conflicting concepts but complementary pillars.

What's interesting is that even some symbolic figures within the camp that championed "anti-Americanism" have acknowledged the value of U.S. military presence. The construction of the U.S. military base in Pyeongtaek gained momentum during former President Roh Moo-hyun's tenure, and the U.S. side evaluated the Pyeongtaek base as "the most modern and efficient among all U.S. military bases worldwide."

Public opinion supports this as well. According to a 2023 survey by Gallup Korea and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, 91.6% of the public responded that "the ROK-U.S. alliance is important," and over half (53.7%) stated that it "should be continuously strengthened." A survey by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs (CCGA) also showed 92% supporting the ROK-U.S. alliance, 74% supporting the stationing of U.S. forces in Korea, and 87% acknowledging their security contribution. A Korea Institute for National Unification (KINU) survey also indicated that over 85% believe U.S. forces are necessary even after unification.

Dr. Friedman's Prediction on the Timing of Unification

Dr. George Friedman, known as the "Nostradamus of the 21st century," predicted in a 2014 Chosun Ilbo interview that "unification will come soon, suddenly one day, and the timing will be before 2030." This prediction shows that unification is not a distant hope but a strategic variable that could become a reality at any moment.

Goldman Sachs's Economic Forecast for a Unified Korea

In its reports from 2009 and 2018, Goldman Sachs analyzed that a unified Korea could emerge as the world's 8th largest economic power around 2050, with per capita income reaching $87,000, ranking second globally. This is not just a figure but a possibility of economic leapfrog that can be achieved by combining the North's resources and labor with the South's capital and technology. Growth potential exceeding that of France, Germany, and Japan suggests that a unified Korea could become a new economic center in Asia.

Prerequisite Conditions for Unification

Liberation Day should be a day to commemorate past independence and simultaneously design future freedom and prosperity. Just as liberation would have been impossible without U.S. military and political support in 1945, the United States will play a decisive role at the moment of unification. Just as the presence of U.S. forces was behind German unification, the success and stability of Korean Peninsula unification will also be impossible without strengthening the ROK-U.S. alliance and the stable stationing of U.S. forces in Korea.

Friedman's timing prediction and Goldman Sachs's economic outlook show the window of opportunity that unification will bring. However, the prerequisite for all these possibilities is that the ROK-U.S. alliance remains strong after unification, and U.S. forces are firmly established as the central axis of security on the Korean Peninsula. Sentimental slogans like "unification among ourselves" and political illusions like the withdrawal of U.S. forces are self-defeating actions that close the door to unification.

The ROK-U.S. alliance is not a shackle that delays unification but an absolute condition that hastens unification and supports the security and economy of a unified Korea. The lessons of history and international politics are clear. The map of a unified Korea must be written in bold letters with the following:

"ROK-U.S. Alliance — The Lifeline of a Unified Korea"
