President Donald Trump on Tuesday (the 30th) welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold state laws restricting transgender athletes from participating in women's sports, calling it a "big win."

President Trump wrote on Truth Social, "A Great Win: The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled against males participating in women’s sports. Wow! That ridiculous situation is finally over!!!"

West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey (R) hailed the ruling in West Virginia v. BPJ as a landmark victory for female athletes and Title IX.

In a statement posted on X, Morrisey declared, "Today’s decision will be remembered as one of the most significant victories for women’s sports since the enactment of Title IX."

Morrisey noted that during his tenure as West Virginia Attorney General, he initiated the legal battle, arguing that the law was based on constitutional principles and fundamental fairness.

He stated, "Years ago, as Attorney General of West Virginia, I brought this case to the Supreme Court because I believed that protecting women’s sports was both constitutional and a matter of fundamental fairness."

In a 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court upheld laws in West Virginia and Idaho that require public school and university athletic teams to be designated based on biological sex, allowing those states to ban biological males who identify as transgender from competing on women's teams.

This ruling overturns a lower court's decision that had sided with the transgender students who challenged the laws.

The ruling allows the 25 other states with similar laws to continue enforcing restrictions on transgender athletes participating in women's sports.

The Trump administration supported both states throughout the litigation, arguing that such measures protect the fairness and safety of women and girls.

Morrisey stated that the ruling ensures the protections of Title IX remain fully intact.

He said, "The protections established under Title IX remain meaningful, the integrity of women's sports is worth preserving, and state governments have the authority to uphold fair competition."

Governor Morrisey added, "This fight may have started in West Virginia, but its impact reaches across the nation. Future generations of female athletes will benefit from the certainty, fairness, and opportunities this ruling guarantees."

The Governor also commended the legal team that has championed the law for years, including West Virginia Attorney General J.B. McCuskey, for bringing the case to a successful conclusion.

Senator Jim Justice (R-WV) also welcomed the court’s decision.

In his statement, Senator Justice said, "When I was governor, I signed the Women’s Sports Protection Act because it was simply common sense. As a coach, I know how hard our athletes work and how much they sacrifice, and I cannot tolerate a situation where they are put at a disadvantage."

He added, "Today is a huge victory for female athletes across America. I am proud that West Virginia had the courage to lead the way. We stood up first, and now the entire country knows that we made the right choice."

On the other hand, a transgender equality advocacy group stated on Facebook that its legal team is reviewing the ruling and reaffirmed its support for transgender youth.

The group declared, "We will never stop fighting to protect and expand the rights of transgender people."

This ruling is the latest in a series of Supreme Court decisions upholding restrictions related to transgender issues.

It marks another legal victory for the administration of President Donald Trump, which has made the protection of women's sports and the restriction of transgender participation in women's sports a core policy priority during his second term.
