U.S. Rejects Extension of Current North American Trade Agreement

According to a new poll, more than 70% of U.S. voters say the trade agreement President Donald Trump reached with Mexico and Canada in 2020 has had a positive impact on the economy.
The Financial Times (FT) reported that a survey conducted by Public Opinion Strategies for the Global Business Alliance found that 72% of respondents believe the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) has benefited the U.S. economy, including two-thirds of Republicans and three-quarters of Democrats.
The release of these poll results comes as the Trump administration officially begins its six-year review of the landmark trade deal, which President Trump negotiated during his first term to replace the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
The poll indicates that a majority of voters believe the USMCA has helped create U.S. jobs and lower consumer prices, demonstrating broad public support for the agreement even as the administration pushes for revisions.
President Trump has repeatedly praised the USMCA as a significant improvement over NAFTA, but has argued that further reforms are necessary as the trade deficit between the U.S. and Mexico continues to rise.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Trade Representative announced on Wednesday that it would not renew the North American trade agreement with Canada and Mexico in its current form, adding that the agreement will now be subject to an annual review.
U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer stated in a release, "The United States has not agreed to renew the USMCA in its current form. Therefore, the USMCA is not renewed."
He added, "The United States will continue to work with Mexico and Canada to address the shortcomings of the agreement and the trade deficits with these countries."
This move is likely to increase uncertainty for North American companies, whose supply chains in sectors such as automotive are deeply integrated.
However, the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) will remain in effect for the next 10 years, even if it is not renewed by the Wednesday deadline.
The free trade agreement will be subject to annual review unless one of the countries decides to withdraw completely.
Both Canada and Mexico requested a 16-year extension of the USMCA, but President Donald Trump stated in June that he was "not willing to renew it," despite having signed and praised the agreement during his first term.
The U.S. and Mexico have held two rounds of bilateral trade talks and are scheduled to hold a third round during the week of July 20.
Mexico has been seeking a reduction in U.S. tariffs on steel, aluminum, and automobiles after President Trump imposed high tariffs on imports of these items.
While Greer did not disclose a schedule for official talks with Canada, he has met with Dominic LeBlanc, Canada's Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Infrastructure and Communities.
The USMCA was unveiled in 2020, replacing the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which had been in effect since 1994.
