Gyeongsangnam-do Province is facing controversy over its plan to offer a 50,000 won subsidy per person for accommodation for Chinese group tourists, aligning with the government's policy of allowing visa-free entry for these tourists for a limited period starting September 29.

According to Gyeongsangnam-do Province on the 14th, the province and the Gyeongnam Tourism Promotion Agency have developed and are selling a stay-type tourism package targeting tourists from Chinese-speaking regions in the latter half of the year. This package connects nine cities and counties, including Geoje, Tongyeong, and Jinju, allowing visitors to experience natural scenery, history, culture, and local festivals all at once. Major travel agencies from Chinese-speaking regions will handle these group tour packages.

In particular, the Gyeongnam Tourism Promotion Agency's plan to provide a 50,000 won subsidy for accommodation per tourist is receiving a cold response from public opinion. The argument is that supporting the livelihoods of ordinary citizens struggling with the economic downturn should be prioritized over supporting tourists.

Critics pointed out, "While tourism promotion is important, improving the living conditions and strengthening economic support for local residents is more urgent." In one online community, sarcastic comments poured in, such as "I don't understand why China is being treated so favorably," "It seems like they have some sort of leverage over China," and "Give that money to improve lodging facilities instead."
