Drove under the influence at a license-revocation level and caused a collision... Sentencing on the 21st
Court building [Seoul=Yonhap News] The prosecution has requested a prison sentence for a police officer who served as the real-life inspiration for the detective character "Ma Seok-do" from the action film series "The Roundup" (Crime City), following his indictment on charges of drunk driving.
On the 7th, during the trial for Lieutenant Yoon held at the Seoul Central District Court under Judge Lee Seong-yeol of the 25th Criminal Division, the prosecution requested that the court "sentence the defendant to one year and six months in prison."
Yoon's defense attorney stated, "The defendant admits to all charges and is deeply reflecting on his actions," adding, "Although he should have set an example in upholding the law as a police officer, he committed a grave error."
The attorney further pleaded for leniency, stating, "Please ensure that he does not end his police career in disgrace due to a momentary mistake, so that he may continue to contribute to society as a police officer."
Under the State Public Officials Act, a police officer is automatically retired if sentenced to imprisonment without prison labor or a heavier punishment for criminal charges.
In his final statement, Lieutenant Yoon also bowed his head, saying, "I live each day in self-reproach and reflection. If you could show me leniency just once, Your Honor, I will ensure this never happens again. I am truly sorry."
The court concluded the arguments at this first hearing and set the sentencing date for the 21st.
Lieutenant Yoon was indicted without detention in April for causing a traffic accident after driving under the influence near Gangnam Severance Hospital in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, on November 24 of last year, while he was serving at the Seoul Suseo Police Station.
Investigations revealed that his blood alcohol concentration at the time was at the level for license revocation (0.08% or higher), and there were no human casualties. Lieutenant Yoon has since been relieved of his duties.
It is known that the activities of Lieutenant Yoon, who has mainly worked in violent crime investigation since joining the police force in 1997, served as a motif for the protagonist, Ma Seok-do, in "The Roundup." Ma Dong-seok, who starred in and produced "The Roundup," conceived the film by gathering stories from the experiences of various detectives.
