Financial authorities and the insurance industry are launching a concentrated campaign to help policyholders claim approximately 10.3 trillion KRW in unclaimed insurance money.
Financial authorities and the insurance industry are launching a concentrated campaign to help policyholders claim approximately 10.3 trillion KRW in unclaimed insurance money.
Unclaimed insurance money refers to funds that have not been claimed by consumers, either because they were unaware that a payment event had occurred or because they failed to check the accumulated interest rates. Primary reasons for these unclaimed funds include the expiration of insurance policies, the accrual of mid-term insurance payouts, and unclaimed retirement pension reserves.
Thanks to ongoing, comprehensive efforts by financial authorities and the insurance industry, the total volume of unclaimed insurance money has been decreasing every year. In 2025 alone, approximately 3.247 trillion KRW (800,000 cases) was successfully returned to consumers.
Starting today, the relevant authorities, with the cooperation of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, will verify the current addresses of policyholders and beneficiaries. They then plan to notify individuals about their unclaimed insurance money through postal mail, mobile electronic notifications, and telephone outreach.
This year, in particular, support measures have been prepared for the elderly who may be unfamiliar with digital devices. In collaboration with consumer organizations, the authorities will strengthen offline training and demonstrations, while continuing public awareness campaigns through various channels, including YouTube promotion and the distribution of promotional items.
Consumers can visit the 'Find My Insurance' (cont.insure.or.kr or cont.knia.or.kr) website to view all their insurance contract details and check for any unclaimed insurance money at a glance by simply completing identity verification. Users can also check the insurance contract details of deceased family members on the same site.
For reference, the 10.3 trillion KRW in total unclaimed insurance money consists of 7.7667 trillion KRW in mid-term insurance payouts, 1.9235 trillion KRW in matured insurance payouts, and 623.7 billion KRW in dormant insurance money.
