Artist Kim Gyu-na has announced her immediate intention to appeal the summary order issued by the prosecution, which found her guilty of violating the Special Act on the May 18th Democratic Uprising, and to pursue a formal trial to fight the charges to the end. 

According to a comprehensive report by on the 15th, the Criminal Division 3 of the Incheon District Prosecutors' Office, Bucheon Branch, decided to summarily indict artist Kim on charges of violating the May 18th Special Act, proposing a fine of 1 million won on the 13th. 

Artist Kim Gyu-na announced via social media that she would not accept this decision and would file for a formal trial. 

Kim stated, "Regarding the Han River Nobel Prize award, I was reported on the case concerning the expression 'Without the suppression of the Gwangju incident, there would be no present-day free South Korea,' and it has been concluded." She added, "The prosecutor in charge decided on a summary indictment (fine) of 1 million won." 

She continued, "This means I am guilty without even a trial. While it might seem like a light penalty as it's just a fine, 1 million won is not a small amount for me, and accepting this would make me a convicted criminal." 

Notification of the prosecution's decision"Most importantly," she argued, "it means that my expression of opinion as an artist on a part of history is deemed guilty. In a country where there is freedom to shout 'Manse' for Kim Il-sung at the Syngman Rhee Plaza, opposing views on the May 18th incident are considered reactionary. How can I accept this?" she questioned. 

Kim stated, "I received notification by text message, and if I object, I must file for a formal trial within 7 days of receiving the payment order. Given the unjust times and current court rulings, it might be a futile effort, but I must try." 

She concluded, "I might even have to take it to a constitutional appeal. I sincerely hope that times change before the trial and that a righteous court ruling is made. I will see this through to the end." 

Netizens have been posting messages of support, stating, "We offer our sincere respect, gratitude, and support for your courageous action." As posts offering to contribute to the trial costs emerged, Kim announced, "Lawyer Gu Sang-jin has agreed to represent me pro bono," and posts praising the lawyer's decision have followed.
