The U.S. political landscape has recently been ignited by the scandal surrounding Graham Platner, a former Democratic U.S. Senate candidate in Maine, who resigned following allegations of sexual assault and professional misconduct. 

This incident is particularly shocking as it transcends the moral failure of a single politician; it exposes the raw, hypocritical reality of the U.S. Democratic Party, which has long postured itself as the protector of "women's rights" and the "Me Too" movement.

Looking closely at this case, it is striking how it mirrors the "partisan logic" and "double standards" often seen in Korean politics.

The Monster Created by Blind Support: 'Platner'

Graham Platner emerged as a rising political star, enjoying full-throated support from the progressive wing of the Democratic Party. Heavyweights like Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren championed him as a "fresh face to represent the working class," and he successfully won the party primary, earning the right to challenge the powerful Republican incumbent, Senator Susan Collins.

However, it did not take long for his mask to slip. Facts emerged showing that he had mocked sexual assault survivors and spewed racist and hateful rhetoric on the online community Reddit.

Further scandal erupted when it was revealed that he had a tattoo on his chest reminiscent of the Nazi SS. His wife leaked evidence that he had been sending lewd messages to other women shortly after their marriage, and former girlfriends came forward with testimonies claiming he engaged in "sadistic and violent behavior, such as locking them in rooms and twisting their arms."

The situation spiraled out of control on the 6th (local time), when a woman he had dated previously provided a detailed account alleging that in 2021, a drunken Platner broke into her home and sexually assaulted (raped) her despite her clear refusal. Ultimately, on Wednesday night, Platner was pushed into announcing his withdrawal from the race.

Justice Rendered Powerless by 'Election Engineering'

The most painful aspect here is that the Democratic leadership and the progressive camp were aware of the "red flags" long ago but chose to ignore them.

Selective 'Me Too': Lenient Toward Our Own

Is it a coincidence that this incident feels so familiar? We have witnessed this pattern countless times in Korean political history.

Whenever a sexual misconduct scandal erupts, the Democratic Party in Korea often avoids protecting the victim, instead spinning conspiracy theories about "political maneuvering before an election" or engaging in secondary victimization by labeling the victim with awkward terms like "person claiming to be a victim."

Even at the moment of his resignation, Platner continued his "victim cosplay," claiming that "the establishment and mainstream media are applying structural pressure to destroy our movement."

They apply rigid standards to the moral failings of the opposing camp, demanding immediate removal and punishment, but rely on double standards for "our side," rationalizing behavior with excuses like "there must have been a reason" or "his contributions outweigh his faults."

The reality in the U.S., where a leftist party that preaches human rights and solidarity acts as a shield for perpetrators to maintain power, perfectly aligns with the chronic "faction-centrism" of Korean politics.

It is a recurring scene in Korean politics: mobilizing party members to sway public opinion when allegations arise, and only resorting to "expulsion" or "resignation recommendations" once it becomes clear that public sentiment has turned so sharply that winning an election is impossible—all while acting as if they are acting in the name of justice.

Miranda Devine pointed out that this situation highlights how fictitious the "moral superiority" claimed by the Democratic Party truly is. She criticizes the bitter self-portrait of modern political parties that are willing to embrace even the shadows of "power-based sexual violence," "misogyny," and "Nazism"—things they supposedly despise—if it means securing power.

The hypocrisy of politicians who speak of justice and human rights while actually chasing power and desire is no different in the U.S. than it is in Korea. Ultimately, it is only the cold, clear-eyed judgment of the voters that can expose and pass judgment on such hypocrisy.
