Maryland state lawmakers announced on Wednesday (the 8th) that they plan to convene a special session in August to discuss the issue of redistricting.

According to The Hill, if the proposed ballot initiative is approved, a vote on the matter will be held in November, and it will not affect the 2026 midterm elections.

Although Maryland is a heavily Democratic state, it currently has one Republican-leaning congressional district; however, there is a possibility that this district could be eliminated due to partisan gerrymandering.

Just the News reported that many Republican-led states have changed their district maps in time for the 2026 midterm elections, with the Republican Party securing a total of about 12 additional seats through these map changes.

Democratic-led redistricting efforts have yielded mixed results, as courts have ruled that changes in California are constitutional, while those in Virginia have been invalidated.

Currently, the U.S. House of Representatives is divided among 217 Republicans, 212 Democrats, and 5 vacancies. Through this nationwide redistricting, the Republican Party is expected to gain approximately 10 additional seats. For the Democratic Party, the number of 'Trump-won districts' they must defend has increased from the existing 13 to 23.
