Representative Jang Dong-hyuk holding a press conference (Seoul=Yonhap News)
On the 10th, People Power Party (PPP) Representative Jang Dong-hyuk responded to backlash from the anti-Jang faction regarding the party's disciplinary plans for those engaging in harmful activities, stating, "Those who are guilty are the ones coming out and asking, 'Why are you trying to discipline me?'"
Representative Jang appeared on the NewDaily YouTube channel 'Baechu Dosa's Dawn Delivery' that day. When asked about the possibility of the ethics committee disciplining members such as his fellow party lawmaker Cho Kyoung-tae, he stated, "I have never specifically said who should be disciplined," before making the aforementioned remarks.
Regarding the view that he had suggested a "permanent ban on reinstatement for those who commit harmful acts" with Independent lawmaker Han Dong-hoon in mind, he reiterated, "I said strict measures are needed for harmful acts, but I never mentioned disciplining any specific person." He added, "However, let's clarify one thing: Representative Han was expelled due to criminal activities, not for harmful acts against the party."
He further added, "The party bulletin board issue is a criminal matter," and stated, "I hope Representative Han reflects carefully on the grounds for his expulsion before making criticisms."
Regarding internal criticism that some local council members colluded with the Democratic Party during the election of chairs following the launch of local assemblies, he said, "Can you call someone who helps the enemy in a war our ally?" adding, "I don't think you can win a war with a ragtag army."
He raised his voice, saying, "People tell us not to engage in 'subtraction politics,' but someone shooting at their own side is the biggest minus. There is no greater minus than that." He continued, "How can you collude with the Democratic Party just to become a standing committee chair and ask them to 'give me one'?"
Representative Jang once again made it clear that he has no intention of stepping down from his position as party leader.
When asked, "You are mentioned as a next presidential candidate in opinion polls. Are you thinking about the presidential election?" he replied, "I believe the future direction of a politician and what they should do are ultimately decided by the party members and the public." He added, "If it is said that we must open an era of party member sovereignty and rebuild conservatism, then even if some lawmakers tell me to resign, I believe I must hold my ground firmly and rebuild conservatism."
He added, "If it is the people's mandate to restore the rule of law and constitutional order that were collapsed by the Lee Jae-myung regime, then I believe I must follow it."
Furthermore, regarding the shortage of ballot papers, he reiterated his stance, stating, "The voting process, procedures, and the voters' decision-making process itself have been tainted. I believe these are not ballot boxes, but 'trash bins' filled with unusable ballot papers," and insisted, "I believe a full re-election must be held."
