U.S. President Donald Trump [AP=Yonhap News File Photo]
U.S. President Donald Trump stated on the 10th (local time) that while he would continue talks to end the war with Iran, he had notified Iran that the ceasefire is over.
On his social media platform, Truth Social, President Trump wrote, "The Islamic Republic of Iran has asked us to continue 'talks.' We have agreed to this, but the United States has firmly informed Iran that the ceasefire has ended."
This appears to be a formalization of the remarks he made while attending the NATO summit held in Ankara, Türkiye, on the 7th and 8th.
During a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on the 8th, President Trump remarked that the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on ending the war, which had been signed with Iran, "seems to be over."
However, he left room for the possibility, noting that he could allow a U.S. delegation to hold talks with Iran.
President Trump's statements come as the two countries have engaged in armed conflict; after Iran attacked a civilian oil tanker passing through the Strait of Hormuz on the 7th, the U.S. responded with successive, large-scale airstrikes on targets including military facilities within Iran, and Iran retaliated by striking U.S. military bases in the Middle East.
With President Trump, who decided to launch the war in late February, now stating that the ceasefire with Iran is over, the situation in the Middle East, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, is expected to remain highly unpredictable.
