  • Police reject 'request for public interview'… People Power Party attempts to enter during standoff but is blocked

People Power Party visits the National Police Agency to protest the 'Jang Yoon-gi case'On the 10th, People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyuk and party lawmakers, who visited the National Police Agency to protest the 'Jang Yoon-gi case', are seen protesting against police officers who blocked the entry of reporters and aides and requested a closed-door meeting with Acting Commissioner General Yoo Jae-sung. On the 10th, People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyuk attempted to meet with Acting Commissioner General of the National Police Agency Yoo Jae-sung to question allegations of botched investigations and cover-ups related to the 'Jang Yoon-gi case', but the meeting fell through due to a disagreement over whether the proceedings would be open to the press.

During this process, the People Power Party leadership, including Representative Jang, engaged in a standoff with the police for about 30 minutes.

The leadership, including Representative Jang, Secretary-General Jung Hee-yong, Supreme Council member Shin Dong-wook, Chief of Staff to the Party Leader Park Joon-tae, and Chief Spokesperson Park Sung-hoon, along with lawmakers Cho Bae-sook and Joo Jin-woo, visited the National Police Agency that afternoon to demand a meeting with the acting commissioner general.

They demanded that the opening remarks of the meeting be made public to the media, but the police refused, citing security regulations for the government building.

Consequently, the People Power Party leadership and lawmakers, who were in a standoff with the police, attempted to enter with their aides and the press present at the scene; however, police officers blocked them, and the attempt to meet was ultimately canceled after 50 minutes.

After the meeting failed, Representative Jang stated, "This is the rock-bottom state of the Republic of Korea's police. The public, who have watched this clearly, will pass judgment," adding, "It is shocking that such a police force has been conducting investigations while claiming to protect the safety and lives of the citizens."

He then targeted Acting Commissioner General Yoo, criticizing him by saying, "Because of this attitude, they show such recklessness, shamelessness, and audacity—destroying evidence, fabricating cases, and attempting to downplay a murder case because one of their own is involved," and added, "What can the public rely on such a police force for?"

He further emphasized, "The issue is not about supplementary investigation powers; first, the South Korean police must be completely overhauled and reformed."

After the meeting was called off, Supreme Council member Shin Dong-wook told reporters, "What is the police chief afraid of that he won't even show his face? If they have a conscience, the acting commissioner general and Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency Commissioner Kim Young-geun should resign immediately."

Previously, the party leadership, including Representative Jang, had visited the Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency the day before to demand a meeting with Commissioner Kim Young-geun, but had to turn back because he was absent.
