Party's Special Committee to Prevent Trial Cancellation Criticizes Ruling Party's Push to Abolish Supplementary Investigation Rights..."Driving the Public to the Brink"

On the 13th, the People Power Party’s Special Committee to Prevent the Cancellation of President Lee Jae-myung's Trial criticized the Incheon District Prosecutors' Office for initiating additional inspection investigations into Prosecutor Park Sang-yong, who had been recommended for disciplinary action for alleged regulatory violations during the investigation into the Ssangbangwool North Korea remittance case, stating, "Targeted inspections will be punished as an abuse of power."
Rep. Joo, the chairman of the special committee, held the second plenary meeting at the National Assembly that day and urged, "Disciplinary action against Prosecutor Park is merely an attempt to create a pretext for canceling President Lee Jae-myung's trial, but such actions will only lead to further crimes," adding, "Immediately stop the additional inspection of Prosecutor Park and abandon the attempt to cancel the trial."
Chairman Joo pointed out, "A request for a two-month suspension for Prosecutor Park has already been filed, but the 'salmon and drinking party' allegation was omitted, and the Ministry of Justice is delaying the disciplinary action," adding, "This is because it is clear that the moment a two-month suspension is imposed, the court will overturn the decision."
He further added, "They are trying to mobilize even a comprehensive special counsel to create a frame that the Lee Jae-myung North Korea remittance case was fabricated, but things do not seem to be going well," noting, "They aggressively imposed a travel ban on Prosecutor Park, only to be forced to lift it."
Regarding the Ministry of Justice's Future Committee, Chairman Joo also criticized, "Their sub-investigation team even applied to view trial records of President Lee's accomplices that are currently under investigation," adding, "Since they are not parties to the case, the Supreme Court rejected the application because it was unreasonable."
He emphasized, "Please keep in mind that the more you resort to petty tricks behind the scenes to cancel the trial, the more your crimes will only increase."
Vice Chairman Rep. Lee Sang-hwi stated, "They are trying to blind the prosecution by abolishing the supplementary investigation rights during the investigation stage, shake up cases already sent to trial by mobilizing the Future Committee, and eventually cancel the indictment itself through a special counsel act," adding, "We will block the Democratic Party and the Lee Jae-myung regime's obstruction of justice and legislative tyranny to the end."
On this day, the special committee revealed that they had requested the Ministry of Justice and the Supreme Court for a list of all historical cases of indictment withdrawal, to which the Supreme Court replied that it "cannot be submitted as it is not managed as separate statistical data."
The committee pointed out that there are only two representative cases of indictment withdrawal confirmed through publicly available academic research, both of which were based on special pardons or procedural flaws, stating, "The withdrawal of the indictment in President Lee's case is not an attempt to correct procedural errors, but an attempt to erase the criminal trial of the President himself, which is already being deliberated by the court."
They concluded by emphasizing, "If the Ministry of Justice cannot disclose past cases of indictment withdrawal and the reasons behind them, it must abandon its attempt to cancel the trial." [Yonhap News]
