On the 14th (local time), U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he would replace the proposed U.S. levy on Gulf shipping with major trade and investment agreements with Middle Eastern allies. He argued that these agreements would create millions of American jobs while maintaining pressure on Iran.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that he reached this decision following "very productive conversations" with Gulf leaders.
He wrote, "Thanks to America's mighty military, oil is flowing at unprecedented levels," adding, "I want to give special recognition to Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Kane, and U.S. Central Command Commander Brad Cooper."
He continued, "Because of these individuals and everyone in the world's greatest military, the Strait of Hormuz is now open to all shipping, with the exception of Iran. The false, violent, and malicious leadership of Iran is leading them down a path of total destruction. Therefore, we will implement a full blockade only on ships traveling to or from Iranian ports or those carrying Iranian cargo."
President Trump stated, "Based on very productive conversations with Middle Eastern leaders, I have decided to replace the 20% oil import tariff the U.S. was bearing with trade and investment agreements in which Gulf nations will invest in the United States," adding, "These investments will be massive in scale, while also having a very positive impact on the Gulf nations and their future."
He emphasized, "As everyone knows, the United States has attracted more dollar investment than any country in history, but this new investment will make that figure even larger. Factories, facilities, and equipment will pour into the U.S. at historical levels, creating millions of additional high-paying jobs!"
President Trump added, "America is winning again, and we are winning like never before. The days of Iran massacring hundreds of thousands of people, including 52,000 protesters, are over, and most importantly, Iran will never have a nuclear weapon!"
This announcement marks a shift in position from President Trump’s proposal the previous day, in which he suggested imposing a 20% surcharge on commercial vessels using the Strait of Hormuz after the U.S. resumed blockade measures targeting Iran.
The President clarified that while the U.S. will continue to enforce a full blockade on vessels traveling to or from Iranian ports or carrying Iranian cargo, it will allow free passage through the strategic waterway for all other commercial ships.
