It was reported on the 20th that the apartment in Bundang-gu, Seongnam, Gyeonggi-do, jointly owned by President Lee Jae-myung and his wife, Kim Hye-kyung, has been sold for 2.9 billion won.

According to the Supreme Court registry, the title transfer for the apartment was completed on the 16th. Notably, the buyers established a mortgage of 1.777 billion won in favor of the President and his wife.

This suggests that President Lee effectively holds a claim for that amount, appearing to have essentially loaned the buyers the funds until the final balance is paid.

The buyers are reported to have expressed their intention to pay the remaining balance by around October.

Industry experts interpret this as the President structuring the contract to provide the buyers with time because they could not secure the full cash amount immediately, thereby ensuring a faster sale of the property.

Regarding this, the Blue House also provided an explanation, stating, "The content on the registry is due to the buyers' circumstances."

Furthermore, the Blue House emphasized, "President Lee recently completed the sale of his home for 2.9 billion won, a price lower than the current market value. While he was under no obligation to sell as a single-home owner, this measure demonstrates his commitment to realizing policies for real estate market normalization."

Previously, President Lee had put the apartment on the market this past February, and a preliminary contract was signed shortly thereafter.

During a cabinet meeting on the 14th, after receiving a departmental report on the 'plan to collect public opinion regarding real estate policy,' President Lee remarked to Prime Minister Han Seong-sook during the discussion, "I no longer have a home." [Yonhap News]
