Kim Myung-hee, Chairperson of Jeong-ik Hakdang, has developed 'Lucia’s Love for Grandchildren: 4-Language Simultaneous Learning' with the help of AI and officially released it on the Google Play Store.
Kim Myung-hee (75, Lucia), Chairperson of Jeong-ik Hakdang, has leveraged artificial intelligence (AI) to develop a 4-language simultaneous learning app, "Lucia’s Love for Grandchildren: 4-Language Simultaneous Learning," and has officially launched it on the Google Play Store.
In an era dominated by AI, this app, created by a 75-year-old senior in collaboration with AI, is gaining attention not just as a learning tool, but as a platform of love connecting grandparents and their grandchildren.
Chairperson Kim, who was unfamiliar with even the word "coding," took on the challenge of developing the app with the help of AI out of a desire to help her beloved grandchildren.
Although Kim was an ordinary senior not accustomed to using smartphones, she learned professional development tools such as Android Studio and the Google Play Console step-by-step with the assistance of an AI assistant (Claude).
The app development process was not smooth. She faced numerous technical hurdles, including the risk of the app being suspended due to Google Play policy violations, version conflicts, and build errors. However, she did not give up.
The true value of this app lies in its role as a bridge of love connecting grandparents and grandchildren. We live in an era where even children use smartphones. The "Lucia’s Love for Grandchildren" app contains 6,022 words.
Chairperson Kim remarked, "A strong foundation in Chinese characters and four languages is essential for improving reading literacy. I hope this app becomes a key to opening up the child's future, more so than any allowance I could give them."
Jeong-ik Hakdang is a public enlightenment educational movement organization founded by Shin Paik-hoon, a Ph.D. in Confucian philosophy (recipient of the Order of Civil Merit), based on the belief of "helping the public with bright light" (晶翊, meaning to illuminate and assist). Recently, it has been focusing on educational innovation in line with the trend of the AI era.
The upcoming "Secret Chinese Character Learning App" is also attracting attention from the education sector for its innovative ideas that break the traditional framework of Chinese character education. Designed to make the principles of Chinese characters easy and fun to learn, the app is expected to spark a craze for Chinese and 4-language learning among grandchildren and the general public, along with "Lucia’s Love for Grandchildren."
Furthermore, Jeong-ik Hakdang is pursuing the development of textbooks linked to digital learning apps. The goal is to contribute to improving the public's literacy with new educational content suited to the AI era.
Chairperson Kim stated, "Our vision is to deploy education that helps the public with bright light, much like the spirit of Jeong-ik (晶翊), into the digital realm. I hope the Chinese character app and the 4-language app will bring a new wave to Korean education."
Shin Paik-hoon, recipient of the Order of Civil Merit, expressed his wish for Jeong-ik Hakdang to continue even after he passes away, explaining, "This app development goes beyond simple educational content; it is the first step in carrying on the spirit of Jeong-ik Hakdang’s public enlightenment into the digital age."
In response, Chairperson Kim shared her aspirations, saying, "Although I was initially nudged into this by the recipient of the Order of Civil Merit, I now feel a sense of mission to lead Jeong-ik Hakdang myself. This app is just the beginning. I will continue to unfold the educational philosophy of Jeong-ik Hakdang digitally."
