New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill (Democrat) announced that 6,660 non-citizens were mistakenly registered to vote due to a software error in the state's motor vehicle registration system. 

Governor Sherrill stated that the system erroneously recorded these individuals as citizens, despite the applicants accurately indicating that they were not U.S. citizens.

Sherrill noted that the error occurred between June 2023 and June 2024, during the tenure of former Governor Phil Murphy (Democrat), and that fewer than 400 of those mistakenly registered actually cast a vote.

In a statement obtained by the New Jersey Globe, Sherrill said, "It was through no fault of their own that the system registered them."

This revelation comes just five days after President Donald Trump warned in a prime-time address that tens of thousands of non-citizens had registered to vote in New Jersey.

Trump claimed there were 35,152 non-citizens on Pennsylvania’s voter rolls and estimated that approximately 250,000 are registered across the states of New Jersey, California, Nevada, and Pennsylvania.

Sherrill stated that she became aware of the issue last week and immediately ordered an investigation and the removal of everyone improperly registered during that period.

She said, "I also directed the removal of all residents who were incorrectly added to the voter rolls between June 2023 and June 2024," adding, "The new MVC (Motor Vehicle Commission) administrator I appointed has begun the process of replacing the vendor responsible for system management."

Governor Sherrill confirmed that the state government has already removed the incorrect registration data.

"Preliminary analysis shows that fewer than 400 of those who were mistakenly registered actually participated in an election," she explained, adding that "these individuals were registered as Democrats, Republicans, and unaffiliated voters, and were scattered across the state."

Despite acknowledging the flaws in the New Jersey system, Governor Sherrill directed sharp criticism toward President Trump.

She stated, "The difference is simple. When we find a problem, we don't hide it, deny it, or create conspiracy theories. We investigate, fix it, and inform the public. That is what accountability and good governance look like, and that is exactly what our administration is doing."

The Trump administration has requested that states submit their voter rolls to the federally operated Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) program to check for non-citizens; however, New Jersey has refused to utilize SAVE for voter roll verification, leading to ongoing litigation with the federal government.

On Friday the 19th, Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin issued an ultimatum to New Jersey, California, Nevada, and Pennsylvania, citing the potential registration of approximately 250,000 non-citizens and demanding cooperation with the SAVE system for rigorous identity verification by July 30.

While New Jersey has previously fought the federal lawsuit by arguing that SAVE-based bulk queries constitute voter suppression, the confirmation of actual non-citizen registrations and votes due to its own DMV error is expected to intensify the federal government's pressure to submit voter rolls and escalate attacks from the Republican National Committee (RNC).
