HAEJOUM ART MUSEUM, the first museum specializing in modern and contemporary art in Geoje, Gyeongsangnam-do, which has focused on highlighting modern and contemporary artists from the Busan and Gyeongnam regions, is hosting a special exhibition featuring five artists titled "Washing Brushes in the Dusk Sea" for summer tourists visiting Geoje Island.
The exhibition will be held from the 24th of this month to August 30th at the HAEJOUM ART MUSEUM (located in Hacheong-myeon, Geoje; open Thursday through Sunday), showcasing the work of five female artists who are actively creating in Busan: Kim Chun-ja, Yeo Ju-kyung, Lee Ga-young, Jeon Hye-won, and Jo Bu-kyung.
The exhibition title, "Washing Brushes in the Dusk Sea," was inspired by the location of the HAEJOUM ART MUSEUM on the coast of Geoje Island, known for its beautiful sunsets, and is a reference to the poem "Washing Spades in the Dusk River" by poet Jeong Hee-sung, a native of Changwon, Gyeongnam.
Among the five Busan-based artists, each with their own creative diversity, Kim Chun-ja is a seasoned painter who has dedicated her work to the theme of "life" throughout her career, presenting dreamlike and uniquely individual pieces.
Korean-style painter Yeo Ju-kyung reinterprets urban landscapes through her own unique sensibility using color painting. By incorporating Eastern materials and techniques, such as traditional mulberry paper and coloring methods, into modern urban imagery, she continuously explores the potential for the modern expansion of Korean painting.
Artist Lee Ga-young’s early monochromatic paintings began with curiosity about the origins and operational principles of the world. Recently, she has utilized materials like clay to explore taboos, desires, eroticism, and bizarre forms, while never losing a warm perspective on life.
Painter Jeon Hye-won’s work is filled with ambiguity. Through figures and still lifes, she visualizes the inexhaustible memories and thoughts existing within, leaving a strong impression like eyes glinting in the dark.
Abstract painter Jo Bu-kyung paints space with simple color fields. Rather than stopping at the background of a specific object or situation, she implements a space from which all descriptive elements have been completely removed, creating a three-dimensional space through the depth produced by subtle differences in color on the canvas.
Lim Ho-geon, director of HAEJOUM ART MUSEUM, stated, "I recommend an art vacation to our museum, where you can enjoy breathtaking sunsets in Geoje, a place abundant with natural wonders and summer retreats. Along with our permanent exhibition 'UTOPIA,' which features works by iconic Korean modern and contemporary artists and painters from the Yeongnam region, this 'Five Artists, Five Colors' exhibition will serve as a healing spot and a must-visit destination for art tours, satisfying the aesthetic sensibilities of both local residents and domestic and international tourists."
Meanwhile, HAEJOUM ART MUSEUM permanently displays approximately 500 pieces from a private collection. It showcases works by modern and contemporary Korean artists such as Lee Jung-seob, Park Soo-keun, Jang Wook-jin, Cheon Kyung-ja, Kim Whanki, and Kim Tschang-yeul, as well as works by artists representing Busan, Gyeongnam, and Geoje, including Kim Jong-sik, Moon Shin, Kim Hyung-keun, Jeon Hyuk-lim, and Yang Dal-seok. Works by Chusa Kim Jeong-hui and calligrapher Seongpa Ha Dong-ju, a native of Geoje, are also on display.
In line with Geoje’s future urban strategy aimed at becoming a marine culture and tourism city worthy of its global competitiveness as the world's number one shipbuilding city, Director Lim Ho-geon also serves as the chairman of the "Art Island Geoje Council," an arts organization that strives to make the city an "attractive luxury city and an island of art" to promote cultural enjoyment for citizens and attract tourists.
This exhibition is hosted by HAEJOUM ART MUSEUM, organized by Gaia Co., Ltd., and supported by the Art Island Geoje Council and Gallery Art Island.
