As U.S. home prices approach near-record highs, a new data analysis reveals that the number of home foreclosure filings has surged significantly across the country over the past six years.
According to an analysis of Attom data by ABC News, foreclosure filings have increased by 71% between 2020 and 2025.
The analysis shows that Florida had the highest annual number of foreclosure filings by zip code, followed by New Jersey, Delaware, Nevada, South Carolina, Illinois, California, Maryland, Ohio, and Arizona.
The zip code with the highest number of foreclosures was 77327 in Liberty County, a rural area northeast of Houston, which saw 8,189 foreclosures over the six-year period.
However, the number of foreclosures remains significantly lower than during the peak of the housing crisis under former President Barack Obama. It is also substantially lower than at the height of the housing crisis 15 years ago.
Experts attribute the recent rise in foreclosures to high mortgage rates, increased property taxes, rising insurance premiums, and the expiration of pandemic-era protections.
Those who have experienced losing their homes due to mortgage defaults state, "If you don't have savings or any way to protect yourself, it could happen to anyone."
Experts advise homeowners concerned about mortgage defaults to seek assistance from a housing counselor as soon as possible, while emphasizing the importance of ensuring that the counselor is a trusted professional.
