OpenAI CEO Sam Altman (from the right), Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong, Naver Board Chairman Lee Hae-jin, and NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang are entering the San Francisco AI Summit held at The Midway in San Francisco, USA, on the 24th (local time). [Yonhap News]
Samsung Electronics[005930] Chairman Lee Jae-yong and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman are set to meet at OpenAI's headquarters in San Francisco to discuss cooperation on AI infrastructure and Samsung Electronics' AI transformation.
OpenAI announced on the same day that Chairman Lee and CEO Altman will hold a meeting with key executives from both companies in San Francisco on the morning of the 25th (local time).
The two sides are expected to focus their discussions on cooperation in AI infrastructure fields, such as High Bandwidth Memory (HBM), DRAM, and advanced foundry services.
Ways to implement generative AI across all areas of Samsung Electronics' operations—its AI transformation—are also expected to be a key agenda item.
Samsung Electronics is one of OpenAI's largest global corporate clients and has decided to introduce ChatGPT and the AI coding tool Codex to all of its employees.
It is speculated that this meeting will explore ways to integrate Samsung Electronics' memory semiconductor and foundry capabilities with the large-scale AI infrastructure projects currently being pursued by OpenAI.
However, specific details regarding semiconductor supply volumes, investment scale, and contract timelines have not yet been disclosed.
Samsung Electronics and OpenAI established a strategic partnership last October and have been working together to expand the production of advanced memory semiconductors and build next-generation AI infrastructure.
OpenAI views the cooperative framework established with the South Korean government, Samsung Electronics, and SK Hynix[000660] as its first national-level strategic partnership announced in the Asia-Pacific region.
Prior to his meeting with Chairman Lee, CEO Altman held a private meeting with President Lee Jae-myung on the 24th, attended the San Francisco AI Summit, and discussed infrastructure cooperation plans with Samsung Electronics and SK.
