Former Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff, purchased an $8.15 million Malibu mansion in December 2025, located in the predominantly white neighborhood of Point Dume.

Point Dume is a location where minority surfers and beachgoers have repeatedly faced hostile treatment and restricted access, the Washington Free Beacon reported on Monday the 27th.

According to the outlet, Harris's mansion is just two minutes away from Little Dume Beach. Although California state law mandates that all beaches below the mean high tide line must be open to the public, Little Dume Beach effectively functions as private property, accessible only through strict controls, including gates equipped with facial recognition technology.

Little Dume Beach is known as an exclusive beach frequently visited by celebrities such as Hollywood star Julia Roberts and billionaire Marc Andreessen to enjoy surfing.

This purchase is noteworthy given that Harris has dedicated her life to fighting against discriminatory housing policies, redlining, and segregation.

The Point Dume area has a white population of approximately 80%, while the Black population is only 2.2%. For reference, the Black population in the entire United States is 14%.

It is also a place where minority surfing groups have experienced verbal confrontations and deliberate blocking of access to waves. The Free Beacon reported that in 2025, the minority surfing group "Color the Water" (CTW) visited Point Dume and was "asked several times where they were from, a hostile tactic used to assert the superiority of local residents."

Harris joins a number of prominent Democratic donors in Malibu who have been embroiled in controversies regarding beach access, including billionaire David Geffen, who for decades blocked the legally mandated public beach path on his Carbon Beach property.

Bhaskar Sunkara, founder of the socialist magazine Jacobin, told the Washington Free Beacon, "I think all Americans have a right to access our beautiful country, and shorelines should be public property and there shouldn’t be any restrictions on access to the coastline."

Sunkara expressed disapproval of Harris's new residence, disparaging the former Vice President as an "elitist" and a "champagne liberal."
