The Human Rights Commission under the Foreign Affairs Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives will review the situation of former South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol.

On Monday, the 18th, multiple posts appeared on X (formerly Twitter) from Korean residents who had reported human rights abuses by former President Yoon Suk-yeol to the U.S. House Human Rights Commission, stating they had received the same response.

According to screenshots of emails shared on X, the emails were sent from the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission, a subcommittee of the U.S. House of Representatives, and read as follows:

"Thank you for your email drawing our attention to the situation of former South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol. We will review the matter. Thank you for your interest in the work of this Commission."

The Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission is a bipartisan subcommittee established in 1983, primarily working to protect the human rights of prisoners of conscience worldwide. The commission refers to this as its "Defending Freedom Project." Currently, 51 members of the U.S. House of Representatives belong to this subcommittee, co-chaired by Representative James P. McGovern (Democrat, Massachusetts) and Representative Christopher H. Smith (Republican, New Jersey).

The human rights commission defines prisoners of conscience as "individuals imprisoned for peacefully expressing political, religious, or other conscientious beliefs, or for their identity, even if they have not committed or advocated violence."

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights reaffirms the equal rights of men and women, stating that everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in the Declaration, without any kind of discrimination. 

Article 3 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights declares that "Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person," Article 9 states that "No one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention or exile," and Articles 18 to 20 stipulate that "Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance," and "Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers," and "Everyone has the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and association."

It is currently unclear whether the House Human Rights Commission will conclude that former President Yoon has been subjected to human rights abuses, and whether any action can be taken by Congress in this regard.

However, posts on X are showing some excitement that the report to the Human Rights Commission received a reply stating, "We will review the matter."

Hundreds of comments such as "Thank you" and "I hope President Yoon is released soon" have been attached to these posts.
