(Seoul=Yonhap News) Reporters Kim Seung-wook, Kim Chi-yeon, Jo Da-un, Noh Sun-woong — Representative Jang Dong-hyeok, a hardline 'anti-impeachment' figure (opposed to the impeachment of former President Yoon Suk Yeol), has been elected as the new leader of the People Power Party (PPP).
The new leader, Jang, was elected with 220,302 votes (50.27%) in the runoff for the party leadership at the 6th National Convention, which resumed at the National Assembly Library on the 26th.
Jang secured victory by outperforming his runoff opponent, former Minister of Employment and Labor Kim Moon-soo (217,935 votes, 49.73%), by a margin of 2,367 votes. It was an upset victory for the two-term lawmaker, who defeated Kim, the party's candidate in the June 3rd presidential election.
Jang was able to win thanks to stronger support from party members.
In the party member elector vote, he received 185,401 votes (52.88%), defeating Kim (165,189 votes, 47.12%) by 20,212 votes. However, in the general public opinion poll, Jang received 34,901 votes (39.82%), trailing Kim (52,746 votes, 60.18%) by 17,845 votes.
In his acceptance speech, Jang said, "I will move forward without yielding if it is the right path," and added, "I will dedicate everything I have to joining forces with all right-wing citizens to bring down the Lee Jae-myung administration."
He stated, "I believe that choosing me as party leader marks the beginning of innovation," adding, "I cannot carry this heavy burden alone. Please stand with me until the end so that we can innovate the People Power Party and transform it into a winning party."
The PPP Election Management Committee also announced the results of the main primary held on the 22nd.
In the main primary, Jang Dong-hyeok received 153,958 votes (132,030 from the elector pool and 21,928 from opinion polls), Kim Moon-soo received 131,785 votes (101,233 elector, 30,552 poll), Cho Kyoung-tae received 73,427 votes (61,410 elector, 12,017 poll), and Ahn Cheol-soo received 58,669 votes (39,599 elector, 19,070 poll). As the top two finishers, Jang and Kim advanced to the runoff.
At the convention held on the 22nd, Shin Dong-wook (172,341 votes), Kim Min-soo (154,940 votes), Yang Hyang-ja (103,957 votes), and Kim Jae-won (99,751 votes) were elected as Supreme Council members. In the Youth Supreme Council race, incumbent lawmaker Woo Jae-jun (204,627 votes) defeated candidate Son Su-jo (200,740 votes).
The voter turnout for the runoff election was 46.55%. The final party leader was determined by reflecting 80% of the party member vote and 20% of the general public opinion poll results.
