Insurrection Special Counsel conducts search and seizure on former PPP Floor Leader Choo Kyung-ho over 'obstruction of martial law lifting' (Seoul=Yonhap News) Reporter Park Dong-ju = On the 2nd, the office of Rep. Choo Kyung-ho at the National Assembly Members' Office Building in Yeouido, Seoul, as the special counsel team led by Cho Eun-seok—investigating insurrection and foreign treason allegations related to the December 3rd emergency martial law—began compulsory investigations targeting former People Power Party (PPP) floor leader Choo Kyung-ho over "suspicions of obstructing the lifting of martial law." 2025.9.2 pdj6635@yna.co.kr
On the 2nd, the People Power Party (PPP) strongly protested, calling it an "investigation to eradicate the opposition party," as the special counsel team led by Cho Eun-seok, which is investigating insurrection allegations related to the December 3rd emergency martial law, began search and seizure operations against former floor leader Choo Kyung-ho and others.
Chief Spokesperson Choi Bo-yoon stated in a commentary, "The special counsel's ruthless search and seizure is an attempt to eradicate the opposition party, going beyond mere suppression," and added, "They may be trying to strangle opposition politicians, but the only thing that will return to them is fierce national resistance."
Chief Spokesperson Choi urged, "The special counsel's reckless investigation was even mentioned during the recent Korea-U.S. summit, damaging the national dignity of the Republic of Korea," adding, "The special counsel must immediately cease this 'political maneuvering' that is dragging the Republic of Korea into international disgrace."
She further stated, "They must immediately stop the attempt to frame former Floor Leader Choo for insurrection," and argued, "The special counsel's extreme measures are just playing into the hands of the Democratic Party's 'insurrection framing' narrative."
She criticized the move as an "excessive human rights violation," asserting, "They even carried out search and seizures on People Power Party secretariat staff who had been actively cooperating with witness questioning."
The People Power Party Secretariat Labor Union issued a statement asserting, "The search and seizure of individual staff members can only be viewed as an excessive, human rights-violating investigation by the unconstitutional Cho Eun-seok special counsel team," and added, "They must keep in mind that today's acts of eradicating the opposition, violating human rights, and acting unconstitutionally and illegally will soon become a sword that turns back on the Lee Jae-myung administration and the unconstitutional special counsel."
Floor Leader Song Eon-seok sent a message to party members stating, "The illegal and unjust special counsel team is attempting to conduct searches and seizures at the offices of lawmakers Choo Kyung-ho and Cho Ji-yeon, as well as the main floor leader's office at the National Assembly," and requested lawmakers to assemble at the offices of Reps. Choo and Cho.
The special counsel, currently investigating suspicions regarding the obstruction of the lifting of martial law, has been conducting search and seizures since this morning, including at the residence of former floor leader Choo in Gangnam-gu, Seoul. The scope of the search also included the offices of Reps. Choo and Cho, as well as the People Power Party's floor leader office.
