The Gateway Fund (TGP), which had reported that the establishment of a special court-martial tribunal was a communist-style political attack and "crossed a dangerous line," reported on August 31 (Sunday) that "South Korea has now been embroiled in a hybrid war."

This statement was made by former President Yoon Suk-yeol last December, and TGP reported that the 8.9 gigabytes (GB) of internal data, obtained in August 2025 by two American hackers who infiltrated North Korea's hacking organization 'Kimsuki,' contained information confirming former President Yoon's remarks.

The leaked records at the time included targeted attacks on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' 'Kebi' email system, the Defense Counterintelligence Command, and South Korea's key national infrastructure. Crucially, it was revealed that Kimsuki shared tools and infrastructure with hackers supported by the Chinese government to conduct joint operations.

On the other hand, China publicly stated through the Global Times on August 19 that "South Korea-U.S. cooperation could become a potential threat if linked to military operations," and prior to that, on July 31, former Chinese Ambassador to Korea Xing Haiming publicly demanded in Seoul to "crack down on far-right youth groups."

South Korean police raided the election corruption prevention committee led by former Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn. Despite the committee being a legally registered election monitoring group, the police cited allegations of 'election interference' as the basis for the search and seizure to justify the raid.

As not only former President Yoon but also his wife, Madam Kim Keon-hee, were detained, accusations of human rights abuses surfaced. Former President Yoon is being held in solitary confinement with restricted access to medical facilities and denied his license, despite suffering from diabetes and an eye condition that poses a risk of blindness.

While the request for a visit from former International Criminal Court Ambassador Moss Tan was blocked by the special prosecutor, recently, a request for a visit from Kim Min-su, a senior member of the People Power Party, was also denied.

Kim Min-su stated on X that "the request to meet the President was denied," and that while Cho Kuk had a total of 29 external visits from family and acquaintances and 19 special visits from politicians, President Yoon Suk-yeol had zero. He questioned, "Is this right?! What is the reason for denial? I request the reason for denial! I will reapply."

TGP pointed out that "Korea's situation is not simply a domestic political crisis but a typical example of hybrid warfare," and that "hostile forces are using internal divisions to dismantle the democratic system of an ally."

They added that "martial law should be evaluated not in a domestic political context but within the framework of extensive foreign interference," and stated that "the detention and human rights violations against Yoon Suk-yeol and Kim Keon-hee require immediate investigation by the international community."

TGP diagnosed the issue of South Korea's communization as being very serious.

On August 21, Kim Min-woong, brother of Prime Minister Kim Min-seok, wrote on Facebook, "This country would have been a model socialist state if the reality of the post-liberation period had been left as it was." TGP interpreted this statement as "if the U.S. had not intervened after liberation, South Korea would have become an exemplary socialist state."

TGP pointed out that teachers, lawyers, civic groups, labor unions, and radical youth organizations affiliated with the Democratic Party are openly praising socialism and spreading anti-American propaganda, and reported that the Korean University Student Alliance (KUSA) has repeatedly attacked the U.S. Embassy in Korea and U.S. military bases.

Specifically, TGP listed the incident on July 30 where KUSA members tore up a national flag in front of the U.S. Embassy in Korea while chanting anti-American slogans, the incident on June 20, 2023, where 18 members climbed the wall of the Yongsan U.S. military base for a surprise protest, and the incident in September 2024 where, despite climbing the wall of the U.S. Embassy residence, the court only handed down suspended sentences.

TGP reported that "these repeated intrusions into U.S. diplomatic and military facilities constitute violations of sovereignty under international law," and "nevertheless, South Korean courts have effectively not punished them by consistently releasing them or sentencing them to probation, citing 'no risk of flight'."

TGP stated that "the United States cannot remain silent," and pointed out that "even more concerning is that the U.S. Embassy in Seoul is not fulfilling its role and is taking a passive stance as the alliance weakens on the ground."

They concluded that "silence in the face of South Korea's slide into communism is unacceptable," and "immediate and firm action is needed to defend the alliance, protect U.S. interests, and support the South Korean people who resist this radical transition."
