Minister of National Defense Ahn Kyu-baek instructed to "swiftly investigate the circumstances of the firearm and ammunition being taken outside" in relation to the incident of an Army ROTC Academy captain’s death by gunshot, the Ministry of National Defense announced on the 3rd.

Minister Ahn also instructed to "severely hold responsible parties accountable and conduct a comprehensive re-examination of the firearm and ammunition management system."

According to the military and police, on the previous day, around 6:29 AM, Captain A, in his 30s and affiliated with the Army ROTC Academy, was found dead with a gunshot wound behind the restroom at Suseongmot in Suseong-gu, Daegu.

A K-2 rifle was found next to Captain A, and a suicide note was also discovered among his belongings. Investigative agencies believe Captain A took his own life.

Captain A was an instructor officer at the Army ROTC Academy and was not in a position that normally required him to carry live ammunition. The rifle in question was also reportedly not his own but belonged to a student of the Army ROTC Academy.

It appears the firearm and live ammunition were unlawfully taken from the unit, and military authorities are conducting an investigation into the circumstances of their removal and the management practices of the unit.
