The 'remodeling' construction of Romania's Chernivtsi Nuclear Power Plant, in which 'Team Korea,' led by Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP), is participating as a core entity, has officially commenced.
KHNP announced on the 3rd (local time) that the groundbreaking ceremony for the 'Romania Chernivtsi Nuclear Power Plant Facility Improvement Project,' in which it is participating, was held at the Chernivtsi Nuclear Power Plant in Romania.
This project, with a total investment of 2.8 trillion won, involves completely removing and replacing the reactor facilities and power generation turbine facilities of Unit 1 at Chernivtsi, whose operating license period has expired after 30 years, and constructing new infrastructure facilities such as radioactive waste storage facilities. It is a large-scale renovation project.
If this were a house, it would be equivalent to a complete 'remodeling' that leaves only the structural frame and essentially rebuilds it.
Chernivtsi Unit 1 is a CANDU-6 (700MW) reactor type, a heavy-water reactor, similar to Units 2, 3, and 4 at Wolsong, which are operated by South Korea.
KHNP secured the contract by forming a consortium with Canada's CANDU Energy and Italy's Ansaldo Nuclear.
CANDU Energy, which originally constructed Chernivtsi Unit 1, will be responsible for the design and equipment procurement for the reactor system, while Ansaldo Nuclear will handle the turbine system.
KHNP will be responsible for overall construction, including the replacement of main and auxiliary equipment for the reactor, and the construction of other infrastructure such as radioactive waste storage facilities.
KHNP's contracted share of the total project cost is approximately 1.2 trillion won.
KHNP's partner companies, including Doosan Enerbility, Hyundai Engineering & Construction, Samsung C&T, and KEPCO KPS, will participate in construction and equipment supply.
KHNP expects that upon completion of the project by the target year of 2030, spanning 65 months, it will contribute to stabilizing Romania's power supply and energy security.
Globally, there is an increasing trend of 'continued operation' where nuclear power plants whose initial operating licenses have expired undergo renovation and have their operational periods extended based on safety verification.
The domestic nuclear industry anticipates that securing this first overseas nuclear power plant 'remodeling' project will increase the likelihood of South Korea's further expansion into related businesses.
Hwang Joo-ho, President of KHNP, stated, "The Chernivtsi Unit 1 facility improvement project is an international model case of cooperation, leveraging the strengths of each company based on partnerships between participating nations," adding, "Based on KHNP's extensive experience in nuclear power plant construction and operation, we will successfully complete the project within the allocated budget and schedule."
