'Assassination of Charlie Kirk' Sparks Unexpected Aftermath... Rallying the Right Across the Globe

(Seoul=Yonhap News) Reporter Shin Chang-yong = The assassination of Charlie Kirk, a prominent American right-wing activist, is creating unexpected repercussions that extend far beyond the United States, according to a report by the American political media outlet Politico on the 13th (local time).
Following the assassination, memorial events for Kirk were held in London, Berlin, Madrid, and Rome. Although Kirk was a private citizen who never held elected office, European leaders issued a deluge of condolence statements.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni wrote on X (formerly Twitter), "A horrific murder that leaves a deep wound for those who believe in democracy and freedom." British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated, "It is heartbreaking that a young family has lost a father and a husband." The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs also issued a statement of mourning.
In particular, European nationalist right-wing leaders seized on Kirk's death as an opportunity to attack left-wing forces.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who maintains close ties with U.S. President Donald Trump, remarked, "We have lost a true defender of faith and freedom," blaming Kirk's death on "the left that spreads hatred." Jordan Bardella, leader of France's far-right National Rally (RN), also condemned "the dehumanizing rhetoric and intolerance of the left."
In the European Parliament, far-right lawmakers requested a moment of silence to honor Kirk, but the request was denied for procedural reasons. In response, some lawmakers protested, citing the case of George Floyd, the Black man who died due to police brutality in the U.S. five years ago, asking, "Why was the Floyd case honored, but Kirk is being rejected?"
Mourning and outrage are crossing borders, with conservative groups in South Africa also holding memorial rallies.
Politico described these reactions worldwide as an "international convergence of populism," explaining that Kirk was at the center of it all. The report suggests that Kirk had played a key role beyond being merely a domestic American right-wing activist, acting as a pivotal figure in spreading President Trump's populist agenda internationally.
While cooperation between political factions in the past was largely driven by elite circles, direct communication and solidarity among grassroots supporters have become active through the internet and social media (SNS).
Politico explained that, at the heart of this network, Kirk served as a bridge that strengthened ideological ties with European populist forces by promoting agendas such as anti-globalization and nationalism, represented by 'MAGA' (Make America Great Again).
The Washington Post (WP) also reported that although Kirk was not a widely known figure outside the U.S., since President Trump's return to power, he had acted as a connecting link between populist and nationalist forces in the U.S., Europe, and Asia.
In fact, Kirk visited the U.K. last May, where he engaged in active outreach by meeting with political leaders and students. In a speech at Oxford University, he predicted, "There is an atmosphere here in the U.K. similar to the currents that led to Trump's rise," adding, "If the conditions align, we will soon see a political revolution."
Just days before his death by shooting on the 10th, he visited South Korea and Japan to meet with right-wing political groups.
In South Korea, he participated in 'Build Up Korea 2025,' an event hosted by the conservative youth group 'Build Up Korea' at KINTEX in Goyang, Gyeonggi-do, on the 5th and 6th, where he gave a lecture on topics including 'The Message Behind Trump's Victory.' In Japan, he attended an event for the far-right Sanseito party.
Politico noted that Kirk is being embraced as a 'martyr' by the right-wing camps in both the U.S. and Europe, predicting that his death will serve as an occasion to further solidify the ideological and emotional bonds of populist forces worldwide.
