The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Korea Meteorological Administration announced on the 15th that they will apply for a preliminary feasibility study for the Korea-type Urban Air Mobility (K-UAM) core technology development project.

This national research and development (R&D) project, to be funded with approximately 430 billion won from 2027 to 2030, consists of 13 projects in three areas: 'Artificial Intelligence (AI) Traffic Management,' 'Vertiport Automation,' and 'Safety Certification System.'

These projects are technologies designed to precisely identify and support flight situations in real-time when UAM operates at high density in urban areas.

While the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport will be in charge of the overall R&D, the Korea Meteorological Administration will support the establishment of a testbed for the project by providing high-resolution weather observation and prediction models, and Ulsan City will provide support for demonstrations.

This project was jointly planned by 13 working groups of 'UAM Team Korea,' a public-private consultative body, and underwent a refinement process including public hearings with experts from industry, academia, and research institutions.

Kang Hee-eop, Second Vice Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and chairman of UAM Team Korea, said, "We will achieve technology-led growth by securing technological competitiveness and fostering K-UAM, a national strategic technology flagship project, as a national strategic industry."

Lee Mi-sun, Administrator of the Korea Meteorological Administration, said, "We will advance weather observation and prediction technologies specialized for low altitudes in urban areas and work closely with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and Ulsan City to do our best to ensure the safe operation of K-UAM and the safety of the public."
