Stephen Miller, Deputy Assistant to the President and Senior Advisor for Policy, on Monday urged a broad, federal response to organized networks contributing to political violence, citing the attempted assassination of conservative leader Charlie Kirk as a catalyst for his remarks.
Speaking on "The Charlie Kirk Show," hosted by Vice President J.D. Vance on Monday, Miller stated that the White House would utilize the Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security to "identify, disrupt, dismantle, and defeat" such networks.
Miller asserted that these networks engage in systematic harassment and intimidation. He pointed to tactics such as doxxing, online targeting, and street protests, which he claimed foster political animosity.
He characterized these activities as a "widespread domestic terror movement" but did not name specific groups or offer official evidence of their connections. He also described some networks as operating in "cell-like structures," creating an environment conducive to violence.
Miller linked his remarks to the attempted assassination of Kirk, co-founder of the conservative student organization Turning Point USA, stating that Kirk's final message to him emphasized the need to counter radical groups "inciting violence." Miller vowed that any response would be undertaken "in Charlie's name."
Miller did not detail specific policy steps or legal mechanisms for these crackdowns. While he referenced the powers of the DOJ and DHS, he did not elaborate on which statutes or investigative tools might be employed.
Newsmax reported that federal authorities have not confirmed whether there are new directives or investigations stemming from his remarks.
Critics countered that the terminology is overly broad and risks being weaponized against legitimate protest movements and advocacy groups. Civil liberties organizations warned that labeling activist behavior as terrorism without clear evidence could lead to constitutional concerns.
Simultaneously, those who support Miller's stance echoed his concerns about the escalating campaigns of harassment and intimidation directed at public figures and institutions. They argue for more robust enforcement mechanisms to curb politically motivated violence.
Miller's comments come as the investigation into the Kirk incident continues to draw national attention. Federal authorities have yet to release full details on potential suspects or motives, and the investigation is ongoing.
Newsmax added that Miller's remarks have added to a broader debate about political violence, freedom of speech, and the government's role in regulating the activities of activist groups across the ideological spectrum.
