 Robert Redford, the American Hollywood actor, director, and producer, has passed away at the age of 89, the daily New York Times (NYT) reported on the 16th (local time).

The NYT, citing Cindi Berger, CEO of the public relations firm Rogers & Cowan PMK, stated that Redford died at his home in Utah. Berger did not disclose the specific cause of Redford's death.

Redford, who had a long career in Hollywood as an actor and director, appeared in films such as 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,' 'Out of Africa,' 'The Sting,' 'Up Close & Personal,' and 'A River Runs Through It.'

He received an Academy Award for Best Director for 'Ordinary People' in 1980 and an Academy Honorary Award for his lifetime achievements in 2002.

He championed environmental protection and promoted independent film as the founder and director of the Sundance Film Festival.

The film festival was named after Redford's character, 'The Sundance Kid,' a real-life figure, from the movie 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.'
