Citizens' Coalition for Economic Justice "Regular National Assembly Should Review and Supplement Prosecution Reform & Supreme Court Justice Quota Expansion"

The Citizens' Coalition for Economic Justice (CCEJ) argued that various reform bills, including prosecution reform led by the ruling party, should be reviewed and supplemented during the regular National Assembly.

At a press conference held at the CCEJ auditorium in Jongno-gu, Seoul, on the 22nd, CCEJ stated, "While we fundamentally support prosecution reform bills, we are concerned about infringements on victims' rights due to the lack of mechanisms to check the arbitrary power of the police in not forwarding cases."

CCEJ added, "The proposal to maintain the prosecution's supplementary investigation authority should also be discussed during the regular National Assembly." Earlier this month, CCEJ expressed a negative stance on the proposal to abolish the prosecution's supplementary investigation authority.

Regarding the expansion of the Supreme Court justice quota, CCEJ emphasized, "In the current structure where the Chief Justice and the President hold concentrated appointment powers, there is a risk of undermining judicial independence." They stressed, "This should be pursued alongside reforms to the deliberation structure, democratization of the appointment process, and ensuring diversity."

Legislative agendas related to political justice, real estate, and unification were also proposed.

Key agenda items include ▲ the bill to make the National Assembly's Ethics Committee permanent and establish an Ethics Investigation Office ▲ the second Lee Chun-seok prevention act (stock trading reporting system) ▲ the bill to strengthen personnel verification for public office candidates ▲ the bill to enhance the public nature of public housing ▲ the bill to prevent actual jeonse fraud ▲ and the bill to institutionalize inter-Korean agreements.

CCEJ stated, "This regular National Assembly is the first test for institutionalizing the new government's national administration direction, but the ruling party is focusing on political slogan-based pledges made during the presidential election campaign." They added, "The National Assembly must prove its ability to cooperate to regain public trust."

Regarding the bills proposed by the Democratic Party to revitalize reconstruction and redevelopment projects and ease building regulations for urban public housing projects, CCEJ expressed opposition, citing concerns about the erosion of publicness. Yonhap News
