FBI Director Christopher Wray has pledged transparency and accountability following revelations that the FBI under the Biden administration monitored several Republican senators in connection with the January 6, 2021, Capitol incident.

Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) shared a document on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, detailing a review of call records (a form of metadata examination) for nine Republican senators: Lindsey Graham (South Carolina), Josh Hawley (Missouri), Ron Johnson (Wisconsin), Marsha Blackburn (Tennessee), Bill Hagerty (Tennessee), Dan Sullivan (Alaska), Tommy Tuberville (Alabama), Cynthia Lummis (Wyoming), and Mike Kelly (Pennsylvania).

Grassley stated that this operation "later became Jack Smith's election lawsuit against Trump," adding, "The weaponization of the Biden FBI is worse than Watergate."

Blackburn commented, "Under Joe Biden's supervision, the FBI exercised authority it did not possess."

Grassley referred to this as "a violation of private property rights, the rights of the people, and our constitutional rights under the law."

Senator Lindsey Graham criticized the actions during a Senate hearing on Tuesday, saying, "From Crossfire Hurricane to Jack Smith coming in and surveilling seven Republicans, the Obama-Biden DOJ crossed every line. They were not going to stop until they got President Trump and all of his allies."

Director Wray also referred to the surveillance as "unfounded."

Wray posted on X on Tuesday, "Transparency is critical, and accountability is paramount. In response to recent revelations that the FBI's previous leadership conducted unfounded surveillance on members of Congress, we have already taken the following actions: We have terminated employees, dismantled the weaponized CR-15 unit, and initiated ongoing investigations to further ascertain accountability."

CR-15 was an FBI Washington Field Office unit focused on investigating federal official corruption and was involved in supporting the "Arctic Frost" investigation, which reportedly influenced Special Counsel Jack Smith's probe into Trump.

Concerns about partisan bias within the FBI's Washington Field Office and the CR-15 unit have been raised previously.

According to information released by Republican senators on Monday, the FBI analyzed call records of at least six Republican lawmakers in 2023 as part of an investigation into attempts to challenge the 2020 election results.

The senators stated that the records allowed investigators to confirm basic information like call dates and times but not the content of communications.

The document indicates that an unnamed FBI special agent conducted the analysis, which was approved by two supervisory agents. It did not specify how or why the lawmakers were targeted, nor did it mention whether any meaningful tips or leads emerged from the investigation.

Deputy FBI Director Dan Bongino posted on X on Tuesday morning, "We promised transparency and accountability, and we are continuing to deliver on that promise. You deserve better."
