Prime Minister Kim Min-seok has been reported to the police regarding allegations of mobilizing a religious group for primaries.
On the 9th, Lee Jong-bae, a Seoul city councilor from the People Power Party, filed a complaint with the police against Prime Minister Kim, accusing him of abuse of power and violations of the Act on Prohibition of Graft and other Improper, Benefit-related Acts, the Political Funds Act, and the Political Parties Act.
Previously, on the 30th of last month, People Power Party lawmaker Jin Jong-oh revealed a recording, stating that there were circumstances showing that Seoul City Councilor Kim attempted to have 3,000 followers of a specific religious group join the Democratic Party and vote for Kim Min-seok in the upcoming local election primaries.
In response, Seoul City Councilor Kim resigned from the Democratic Party and filed a complaint with the police against lawmaker Jin for defamation based on false facts, among other charges.
At the press conference held in front of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, Councilor Lee stated, "According to media reports, it is not possible to rule out a reasonable suspicion that Prime Minister Kim and Seoul City Councilor Kim Gyeong met in June and conspired in some way," before submitting the complaint.
He argued, "It is highly unusual for a Member of Parliament from Yeongdeungpo to meet with a city councilor from Gangseo-gu. If they conspired in recruiting party members, it would be a serious case of undermining the nation's order," and asserted, "If Kim Min-seok participated in party member recruitment as a form of pre-election campaigning, it constitutes a serious crime that undermines democracy."
