Following the death of a South Korean university student who was kidnapped in Cambodia, the National Assembly's Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee will conduct an on-site parliamentary audit in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, on the 22nd (local time).

According to the committee on the 13th, the special subcommittee for overseas mission audits will hold an on-site audit at the South Korean Embassy in Cambodia in Phnom Penh to inspect the status of crimes targeting South Koreans in Southeast Asia.

This comes in response to a series of crimes targeting South Koreans in the region, including the case where a university student who visited Cambodia in August after saying they would "go to an exhibition" was kidnapped and died at the hands of local criminal organizations.

Rep. Kim Ki-woong of the People Power Party, a member of the committee, stated in a phone call, "We will confirm how much local investigative authorities understand about crimes targeting South Koreans and the specific circumstances of the murder of the South Korean university student," adding, "We are requesting to receive a briefing from the authorities."

During the parliamentary audit of the Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee, which was held for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other agencies on this day, ruling and opposition parties engaged in a blame game over the kidnapping and death incident in Cambodia.

The Democratic Party of Korea argued that "despite the surge in crimes targeting South Koreans in Cambodia over the past two years, the embassy and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the previous administration did not take proper action," while the People Power Party attributed the issue to the current administration, stating that "the ambassador to Cambodia was vacant at the time of the incident."
