During the parliamentary audit of the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency by the National Assembly's Administration and Safety Committee on the 21st, it was again pointed out that the investigation team for the death of a Gyeonggi Yangpyeong County official, who died after being investigated by the special prosecutor team for First Lady Kim Keon-hee, should be replaced.
Hwang Chang-sun, Commissioner of the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency, delivers opening remarks at the parliamentary audit of the Gyeonggi Nambu and Bukbu Provincial Police Agencies by the National Assembly's Administration and Safety Committee, held at the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency in Jangan-gu, Suwon-si, Gyeonggi Province, on the 21st. Yonhap News.
Lee Seong-kwon, a lawmaker from the People Power Party, criticized, "The Yangpyeong Police Station is investigating the death of the Yangpyeong public official. However, the head of the special prosecutor's investigation team (who was in charge of the deceased's investigation) is a former chief of the Yangpyeong Police Station. Shouldn't the investigation team be replaced to prevent a conflict of interest?"
This criticism was also raised during the parliamentary audit of the National Police Agency on the 17th.
Hwang Chang-sun, Commissioner of the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency, replied, "As stated by the acting commissioner during the National Police Agency audit, I understand that a plan to replace the investigation team is under review."
Lee also pointed out that the body was autopsied despite no signs of foul play, and that the family was shown a scanned copy of the will, not the original.
Hwang explained, "The family became too emotional while viewing the will and said they could no longer continue, so we couldn't show it further. After completing the funeral procedures, we allowed them to view the 21-page will before handwriting analysis, and at the family's request, we also provided a copy."
Regarding inquiries about the contents of the will, he refused to disclose it, stating, "There are parts related to privacy, and the police have no precedent of disclosing wills."
Seo Beom-soo, a lawmaker from the same party, argued, "The deceased was investigated for 1 year and 5 months starting in 2021 and was found not guilty and not forwarded. The special prosecutor is reinvestigating a case that was concluded as having no issues after such a long investigation. The special prosecutor team leader, who is a former Yangpyeong Police Station chief, is committing a typical organizational impropriety."
He then asked, "The deceased's handwritten memo (released to the media) contains allegations of the special prosecutor's attempts to persuade, coerce, and abuse authority. How about the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency investigating the special prosecutor?"
Hwang replied, "The preferential treatment allegations in the Gongheung district development in Yangpyeong were investigated by the Anti-Corruption Investigation Division of the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency (the superior agency to the Yangpyeong Police Station). Regarding the special prosecutor, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, which received the criminal complaint, is scheduled to investigate."
