U.S. President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi are expected to visit the U.S. naval base in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, together on the 28th following their summit meeting, to reaffirm the robustness of the U.S.-Japan alliance.

According to Kyodo News and Yomiuri Shimbun, President Trump and Prime Minister Takaichi are anticipated to hold a summit meeting and working lunch in Tokyo before boarding the U.S. presidential helicopter, Marine One, for a visit to the Yokosuka base.

"It is rare for a foreign leader to travel together (with President Trump) on Marine One," Kyodo reported, adding that "it will be an opportunity to showcase the strength of the U.S.-Japan alliance."

President Trump and Prime Minister Takaichi are also coordinating a plan to board the U.S. nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS George Washington together at the Yokosuka base. The Yokosuka base is the only overseas homeport facility for U.S. aircraft carriers.

The Washington, referred to as a "floating military base," is three times the size of a soccer field and can accommodate a crew of 5,500.

During his visit to Japan in May 2019, President Trump visited the Yokosuka Maritime Self-Defense Force base and boarded the Japanese Izumo-class helicopter destroyer Kaga with former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Meanwhile, Yomiuri reported that Prime Minister Takaichi will convey Japan's policy to increase its defense spending (defense budget) to over 2% of its gross domestic product (GDP) in the long term during the U.S.-Japan summit meeting.

Prime Minister Takaichi plans to explain her intention to achieve the goal of increasing Japan's defense spending to 2% of GDP by advancing the target year by two years to fiscal year 2025 (April 2025 - March 2026).

Japan's defense spending for fiscal year 2025 is projected to be 1.8% of GDP, and the government is pursuing a plan to further increase this year's defense spending through supplementary budgets. Through this, the target of achieving "2% of GDP for defense spending" will be advanced by two years from fiscal year 2027.

Along with these plans to increase defense spending, Prime Minister Takaichi is expected to convey her resolve to enhance defense capabilities by revising the three key security documents early to President Trump.

However, considering the immense financial resources required for the defense spending increase, Yomiuri reported that Prime Minister Takaichi is not expected to mention specific defense spending figures for beyond next year in this meeting.
