President Donald Trump stated that he will soon authorize the use of military force to stop land-based drug trafficking from Venezuela.
These remarks came on Thanksgiving Day, November 27 (Thursday), during a phone call and Q&A session with several U.S. military personnel. He boasted that recent airstrikes had slowed down maritime drug cartel smuggling.
President Trump said, "In the last several weeks, you've been trying to intercept many Venezuelan drug smugglers. Of course, there aren't as many coming by sea now. You've probably noticed that."
The Department of Defense conducted approximately 20 airstrikes in the Caribbean, destroying Venezuelan drug-carrying vessels bound for the United States.
President Trump informed the soldiers that drug trafficking has been "85% interdicted at sea."
He continued, "You've probably noticed, they're not going to ship drugs by sea anymore. We're going to start interdicting them by land too. It's easier by land, but it will start soon."
He added, "We've warned them. Stop sending poison into our country."
For several weeks, the President has stated that he would not rule out deploying ground troops to interdict Venezuelan drug trafficking.
