Plays drug and smuggling villain Min Joo-young in 'Good Boy'... "I want to enjoy acting for a long time"

Actor Oh Jung-se, met at the Prain TPC headquarters in Gangnam-gu, Seoul on the 17th, looked back on how he portrayed the villain Min Joo-young in the JTBC drama 'Good Boy'.

Min Joo-young is a model 7th-grade public official at the Korea Customs Service by day, but a kingpin in the underworld involved in all sorts of crimes, including drug and car smuggling, by night.

It was not easy to portray a villain with two faces, not one with a tragic background, nor a comical gangster. So, he said he put a lot of effort into styling, expressions, and speech.

Oh Jung-se explained, "While other villains in the drama have their own stories, I thought of Min Joo-young as a complete villain who couldn't evoke sympathy. There were lines that could have been made funny with a slight shift in direction, but I deliberately held back and acted. I didn't want Min Joo-young to appear light or human-like."

He then showed an image he had saved on his smartphone. It was a foreign man's face with a vertical black scar above one eyebrow.

"I saved this movie still image long before I was offered the role of 'Good Boy.' When I was playing Min Joo-young, I wanted him to have a scar like this on his face, and I even told the makeup team, and they actually applied it."

He also paid attention to his attire and hairstyle. In the early stages, he tried to portray the public official Min Joo-young by buttoning his shirt up to his neck and not styling his hair.

While appearing simple on the outside, he subtly displayed his desire to show off by wearing pants worth 3 million won and shirts worth 4 million won.

Oh Jung-se interpreted the character by saying, "Min Joo-young's weapon is his firm belief that his world will never collapse. (He is) a character who shows how dangerous and terrifying great power and dirty money are."

The ones who bring down this Min Joo-young are the passionate rookie detective Yoon Dong-joo (Park Bo-gum) and other special recruits who are former national athletes.

When asked what role he would have wanted if he were a police character in 'Good Boy,' he replied, "I was good at soccer, wrestling, and Taekwondo when I was young. Wouldn't it have been fun to be a police officer in the special team who uses one of those skills?"

He confessed that there was unexpected difficulty when filming scenes where he had to shoot a gun a lot.

He laughed, saying, "I tried to act like I was shooting 'bang bang' without batting an eye, but when they filmed it in slow motion, I flinched and closed my eyes every time I shot. In the end, the director gave up on some scenes. Personally, it was a small but significant difficulty."

Although he played an intense villain this time, one might expect him to want a good role next, but Oh Jung-se showed an open attitude, saying, "I don't want to plan what I want to do next. I want to meet good projects without being fixed."

He debuted in a minor role in the 1997 film 'Father'.

Afterward, he made his mark in the film 'How to Use Guys with Swords'. He has played diverse roles, moving between lead and supporting roles, such as the lovable rogue Noh Gyu-tae in the drama 'When the Camellia Blooms' and Moon Sang-tae, who has autism spectrum disorder, in 'It's Okay to Not Be Okay'.

His goal, with nearly 30 years of acting experience, is to continue working with enjoyment for a long time.

"When I first started acting, I wasn't confident that I would become a cool or good actor, but I was confident that I could do it for a long time. I thought, 'I should act with enjoyment for the long haul,' and I think I'm still doing well in that regard. My goal for the future? I want to enjoy acting as much as possible and act for a long time."
